Even if they aren't supposed to fight, when they do they should still get better at it. Especially the Klingon scout.

it wasn't much of a logical decision but gameplay wise the scouts are just there for scouting, so ranks were never considered. personally i am trying to avoid to get the scouts into combat at all, even the klingon one. usually they are more valuable for me as scout than an offensive ship. the missing ranking highlights this role. still, that may change in the future. i see no problem with scouts having ranks but it's not a must-have all important feature either.

I wouldn't complain if Scout ranks are a low-priority, since it's only minor. Scouts can double as controllable fighters (at least, that's what I sometimes use them for). Ranks could also help the AI, I often see a Venture flying around that the AI doesn't know is supposed to scout.

I would not want scouts to get better offensively... but... i would want their primary mission "SCOUTING" to be more efficient! I mean... more sensor range... more speed... "tachion" (sorry for the misspelled... i drew a blank) detection to find cloaked ships and cloaks for ships that dont naturally do it. Nothing offensive here... just more or better internal systems!

That's what my rankup did; Regular ranks increased defence, Officer 1 increased sensor range a bit, Officer 2 increased sensor range a little more and added Tachyon sensors.
How many ways are there to rank up (aside from the killing, of course)?

scouts could indeed rank up other ways than through kills...

How about battles they escape alive? THAT would be good! Because it is hard to survive on a scout vessel. So the more battles it survives, the higher its rank. Though would my veteran ideas be considered? The speed increases I can do without... though I'd like at least some of my ideas interprited.

The problem with scouts having a weapon "for self defense" is that that weapon will only defend if you A: have packs of them and B are facing a destroyer or two at most. The best option i can think of is to drop the weapon on the scouts and boost their defenses to destroyer levels.

How would that work? Get exp when they leave the sensor range of whatever is attacking them?

And then, the enemy corners and slaughters your scouts...the weapons are not very strong, but it at least allows them to die fighting.

there is an "in fight" flag, lioke when you can't recrew in fight, so that you could say if it was like 10 times in fight, it would rank up, or so..

A levelup for being hit 10 times? Maybe starting a little lower and increasing by level, just like exp?

it was only a example^^
it could also be 2 for rank2, 5 for rank3 and so on..
