I would like to see a new type of ship that is like a heavy destroyer or light cruiser but can also build a few station types, like defense platforms, sensor arrays, and mining stations. I don't know whether every race should have one.

awful idea.... Feds wouldn't do this as they are defensive and explorers by nature so wouldnt go around propping stations from normal starships... Romulans are cloak and dagger and would spend the resources on ships... Klingon like to face the enemy like warriors.... Borg, are the borg, why build when you can assimilate? And the current dominion constructor is built like a brick so can dish out some lovely turrets :)

i'm not for this. i remember in TA when construction in battle was a viable tactic (con vehicle laying down missile forests behind battle, also reclaiming wreckage for the metal needed). it resulted in extremely viable strategies of walking turrets. that's not something i think is fun for an rts. so i don't want it in fo.

Something like this is coming for the Feds with v4 -- one of the ways they'll be expected to take an area is to use Newtons and (if you get one from warp-in) Rigel Nebulas to drop platforms. Limited even compared to the original idea in this thread, but still in the ballpark, concept-wise.

Personally, the only 'battle' I like in my constructors is weapons on the basebuilding civilian ships.

Besides, there's already at least 2 warships that can drop turrets.
