Roms have more backstory hinting at more ship types however (plus TOS ships).

Borg, you pretty much just see massive shape shaped ships make repeat appearances, plus the rogue borg ship and the TNG borg scube and probe in Voyager.

Even the probe was, for it's intended purpose as basicly a scout/sentry, pretty massive.

Then you get the A1/A2 borg....... and since they have to reinvent trek to give it the utterly stupid 'each ship has weapons one step up in power, as well as the same ships of each powerlevel' balancing scheme this resulted in some silly borg ship designs, as (especilly in A2) they were unable to really make the borg unique (as it'd make people cry about it in MP I guess).

that said, it is possible to do the borg right with fewer ships, the thing is..... why NOT ?

Combine most of teh abilties amongst all ships, with some ships lacking as logical (IE: no blue/green pwn beams for a scout)

what trek you watching? there wasnt any more hinting at other rom ships than there was for other borg ships. only feds got truly varied designs, no money for other races lol.

Feds mostly got kitbash's or random 'we do movie lets make random ships to blow up' or 'we do movie/show lets make new ship as center of it' designs.

Klingons also got a lot of varriety, the D6/D7 line (including the K'Tinga), BoP, Negvar, Vor'cha, K'vort, possibly a few more I've forgotten.

Romulans had the BoP in TOS plus the Klingon D6's that were sold to them, in TNG they had warbirds and their scout/shuttle/runabout type, plus they seemed to (like the cardassians and their galors) seemed to focus on mass producing a powerful ship for projection of power, and just thinking common sense wise (to me anyway) it'd make sense that they'd have various other smaller ships for internal issues, plus it fits into the way the races are portrayed in trek, the empires focus on power, the Feds focus on versatility. The Borg, adaptation and overwhelming thru sheer brute force/size. Even the auto assimilator design dwarfed the Enterprise-D, the 'probe' was also quite massive, we only see a small borg ship in the crashed scube the Ent-D found Hugh on. Plus, the Borg aint exactly big on being unique, which would imply they would focus less on myriad designs, when they could just have a small number of ships that focus on a specefic job. The Tactical cube, when it's a real fight. The Cube, when brute force is needed to assim an entire civilization in a fell swoop. The sphere as a generalist. As Blazing mentioned the auto assim was called a 'multi-kinetic neutronic mine' on a borg display in a Voy episode, I'm guessing it's just meant to guard an area and spam torpedos, sort of a sentry type. The probe, standard scouting. The scube, bait, if it is destroyed or endangered then attention is focused on an area.

But the bigger a ship is for the borg, the more it can do most of the other roles as well (other than bait anyway, a cube would tend to scare off folks). That leaves ships like the flops assimilator and pyramid and the dode out of a job. It would also leave the flops adaptor out of a job....... cause thats the role of each and every borg ship and the collective as a whole, all of their ships adapt.
