the excalibur is something that i dont know what to feel about.
its well designed, looks nice, but isnt something i think belongs in starfleet, starfleet doesnt build dreads.

Probably depends more on what they feel's needed, they've proven they're willing to build what they normally wouldn't. They also don't build warships, everyone knows how that ended.
Last time the ship was brought up, didn't we say it was more like a Terran flagship? It could make a good Terran map unit.

I agree with you about that, BUT it wouldnt be that hard to come up with an explination on why they would builda ship like that. I mean Starfleet doesnt build "warships" either but we still got the Defiant class. Desperate times cal for desperate measures, I could see it as a one off prototype.

this comes down to whether we think a dread would be useful for starfleet. i would say not, if war was coming i would expect them to make many more defiant classes to fill out the fleet. low crew, high power.
a dread always seemed purely psychological to me. and stafleet seems too rational to waste ~1000 crew on something that isnt really helpful.

i disagree with it being a routine thing. everony has to move around the ship. so a "routine" sep would take many minutes, as civilians dont run to the saucer. its a lot of work to split a ship in half with divides based on civilian/starfleet.
even with a bigger budget i think it would have got cheesy if they split the ship that often.
Funny thing, reading your post reminds me of the episode where Data build another android (Lal) and the admiral comes on board to take her because they wanted to examine her back at HQ, and he points out if something happens to the Enterprise they could both be lost (Data and Lal), such as a "lucky shot" from a warbird an such, yet theres no worry about all the hundreds of civilians on the ship that would lose their lives. Just thought it was kind of funny considering this debate.

Humans/aliens are a dime-a-dozen, Data and Lal are 2 of a kind. Well, 1 of a kind now assuming no more Soong-type androids get pulled from someone's ass..

the Excalibur isn't supposed to be an immense dread ship like a cube. its a very good ship of war (used for taking planets and ships) but not a war ship, its like the Galaxies when they came out; not a war-ship but good at it, they're both science ships.
Starfleet tried to make a "one for all" ship in case they're under attack again. The Excal would be a heavilly armed ship that can take care of stations, big ships, and maybe 2-3 small ships, but it will die hard-time if it come under attack by a fleet of small ships (or even big ones).
Story-line wize, I doubt that families would be on any ship that would go into battle. I meanhow stupid is this? "Civilians! in three days we will engage the Dominion. We will have to be retrofitted with battle equipment. you will not get out of this ship during that time and we will most likely die in front of a superior force from a weird part of the Galaxy. be useful and don't bother us again! this isn't the Borg and you won't be captured, just KIA" thats like :fish: a civ. 800-900 is SF personnel.
an Excal full would be around 1700-2000

Having the Excaliber class as a fed mixed tech "dread" would be cool.

I understand that, but the point was the admiral thinking the Enterprise was too dangerous a place to have the 2 only known soong type androids onboard was kind of humerous, given the fact that they are on a ship full of non commisioned men, women, and childern. And really, are you now suggesting that starfleet feels that all those civilians are expendable and not an android?

This idea is indeed possible. My V.R.A. repair ships from my mod use repair drones to fix ships.

I wasn't saying that, but now that you mention it I wouldn't be surprised. Civilians have proven capable of being as dumb as a Voyager plot, I'm surprised Starfleet hasn't personally offed them already.

Maybe so, but that begs to question why let them on the ship in the first place then?
