problem with that is you dont always have cehlaers to get in before they can use polar. feds and klinks only have critical shot and polaron (field and torp). and they both failed, as polar happens instantly while critical and polaron dont happen instantly. and i would sweard from what i saw that critical shot didnt even disable its weapons when it did hit, they still used mass polar only a second after critical shot. veqs with special only work if you're taqqy, same as combat tractor. and i believe the klink in this match was martok.
if we'd had cehlaers then it would have been an easy game as you can stun it from long range before it gets anywhere near your ships.
part of my recent experience stems from a map (halma) where an early yard in the sorta middle was hard to dislodge before dread came out.
we already had our forward base close enough that if we made any significant raids behind their front line, the dread could be at our forward base pretty fast.
i will admit that our scouting in that match was awful as we got surprised by dread, thats probably the main reason we werent prepared. but the scaling of mass polar throughout the game was really what fueled my frustration and 23s post. as the game goes on and fleets get bigger a weapon shouldnt ge more effective for the same initial cost and energy cost.

I think Critical Shot has a 20-30% chance to fail against a Dreadnought.

I hate asteroid Halma.
In fact, if someone were to suggest it to me, I'd probably tell them to find a different map.
It has one corridor, so there's no real strategies or tactics involved. Controlling that center pretty much ensures a win, and everyone knows what you're planning unless you're a cloaking race. And you can put turrets or ships near the opening to curb scouting. Let me guess: Sutee was host and said he wanted that map, didn't he.
I'm on to you, Sutee! :kid: Well, this explains why you have frustrations and why 23 down was growling at me. If I got V-15 rushed on Asteroid Halma, I'd be grouchy too.
It is a totally lame strategy, even if counterable. I'm glad it will go away and be changed to something better. Next time you'll be aware of that possibility, will have good scouting and will totally crush their economy before it becomes a thing. I highly recommend not teching up too much so that you can get ship numbers out. I'm assuming the defiant was later. Just be glad you weren't around when the V-15 was cheaper, faster, and the mixed tech research took less time. Ah, the good old days when getting a dread out was super easy and near impossible to counter.
Halma moons are also a little more difficult to harass, because the starbase can usually cover the main moons. I think the old maps should be put to rest sometimes. The newer maps that people are making are much more open and have less cheese in them.

actually i suggested it cos sutee didnt want star traffic. usually most people ignore strats such as turtling the middle, everyone and their grandad knows halma has these strats, but they end up being seriously boring. so most people play nicely, on a map thats simple.
but yeah i guess thats the price to pay for a more balanced map, repetition, people say they're sick of duel II, but other maps are unbalanced. so you either have crappy maps, or play a small number of good maps over and over.

NJM has some interesting maps, but nobody plays them and gives him feedback.
If we gave him some, maybe he'd make more maps!

Did this in a 4v4 yesterday. We just triple/quad teamed each of the expansions and then took out the dread.

Hey Mal.
I simply wanted to apologise for my outbreak lately usually it isn't my style and after re reading your post I also noticed that there was no offence from you after all. I guess I just was to tired and irritable to understand it which isn't an excuse but an explanation.
So at the end if was basically a misunderstanding from my part. While it wont make it retrogressive what happend I just wanted to let you know. Sorry for my behaviour it may come a bit late but better late than never.
As for my previous statement claiming that the balance is at risk with dreadnoughts on the map. I revoke that. People were right we were simply to defensive & shouldn't have allowed it at the first place.

No worries, man.
Balancing conversations can get pretty intense, but it's no biggie.
