So I was playing against 2 Federation AI Merciless, and 1 Federation AI Hard. And I was giving them a good whoopass. I was destroying the second AI and the game crashed due to 'out of memory'.
Would this be because of too many ships possibly? What causes the out of memory thing?
I would have won the game. Quite disappointing.
I had four full fleets. I was spamming from 3 battle yards, and three field yards. Each with kvort and kbeajq extensions.
I had Five starbases. 12 moons. Probably had about 30-40 HWPs.
At the time, there were only two AIs left.
This has never happened before. Is this because of my computer? Or FO?
Although the game crashed, I declare victory for myself. The AIs were gettin' stomped.
It wasn't technically a crash. It just exited the program and gave a pop up saying out of memory.

Have you modified anything? That usually happens when an odf has a quatation mark missing or misplaced.

Sigh.
No, I haven't modified anything. Don't really know much bout doing that stuff.
gah, and it was a fair game too. Well, except for the shroud and fog being off.
But everything else, normal resources.
Well, in a sense, I guess it doesn't matter anymore. I just wanted to know how many AI I could beat at what levels to be the hardest game.
I pretty much have my answer. Been trying for a few days now with this new patch to beat 3 Mercys on Blue Amber and couldn't. But 2 Mercies and 1 Hard was doable. Tough game. But once you pass the crest and have the winning edge. You get em good.
I found a good strategy to claim the win. Just avoid fleet engagements. Uncloak, pound the stations to oblivion, recloak, move to next expansion. With even one fleet of thirty, you can do this pretty effectively. Puts the AI at defensive. Let's you rack up the di/tri. Once you have them cornered to just their main base, then built up additional fleets and do the same. Worked quite well actually.
I think I'll just go back to having shroud and fog on, and play 2 merciless AIs. I think that would be just as doable, and just as fun a game.

do you use a 32 or 64 bit OS. how much ram do you have? have you installed a nocd crack, meaning, have you replaced the armada2.exe or armada2.ldl?

i have a 32bit OS. 2048 mb ram. i dont know what a nocd crack is. so probably not. and have not replaced anything. only thing I change with Armada is when I get new patches. just go through the steps and uninstall the previous stuff.

no problem. at least I'm pretty sure it is 32bit. I have an older dell. can't say for sure though. but yeah. not sure how it helps, but as best I know.
its weird if it was because of too many ships. i had just upgraded to spamming from 9 yard, 3 kvort, 3 kbeajq, and 3 battle, ... had been just 2 of each for a while, but one ai was completely out of the game. so they wouldnt have been producing anything. should have balanced out. but everything seems fine in a game since. its all working.

I have also run into this issue recently as one of my other systems have the same thing happen after a 2 hour long match. The specs are:
AMD Opteron 170 dual core at 2.5 GHz
Radeon 3850 HD AGP
2.2 GB DDR1
ASUS A8V-X mainboard
The system is running windows XP Pro 32bit and there were no changes made to the install of FLOPS. I do use an ISO of my disk on that system but my main rig also does and never had that issue before.
BTW godsvoice, did you deleting and reinstalling the game help?

It has only happened once, and not since that one time. Generally this does not happen. I have had crashes due to bugs though I think. But nothing ever to do with out of memory pop ups.
As of yet I have not deleted or reinstalled/uninstalled the game.
If it continues, perhaps that would be something to consider.

We are working on reducing the memory footprint longterm. Thanks for your reports.
Btw changing compatibility modes should not improve anything on that matter. especially if these are set on the fleetops.exe this is nothing more than a placebo. The fleetops.exe just lauches the armada.exe in the data directory, so it not plays a role during the actual game.
Fleet operations is developed and tested under win 7 x64.

It could be that, at the time you were playing flops, other programs sucked up more memory than you useally have. I.e. you have have one or two more programs running alongside fleetops that you normaly don't have running but sucks up just enough memory to cause an out of memory error.
It happened to me once with the 3.1.5 patch. Don't know if that was the case then though. But it could be your source of the problem at that time

Well a buddy of mine also had the issue several times even after fresh restarts, he was running XP with 2 gigs of ram. It only seemed to happen in longer games (which we tend to have in our group), my system is running 4 gigs and I never ran into the issue myself however as I said my other PC with xp and 2 gigs did the same thing.
