Number of AI tech levels?

I'm wondering if the AI tech levels are hardcoded at 1-5 as the guide indicates or can they be increased indefinitely. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The AI in the 2014 version of Fleet Ops only uses a single tech level. Modders such as myself have experimented with many tech levels and we haven't hit the limit yet, so it's probably very high (it works with 15 at least).

If it's just an integer, it will probably never have a problem even if you use hundreds.
