I never heard of it forcing one to install a toolbar.

Daemon Tools version 4 and higher installs spyware unless you pay for it. Version prior to 4 do not. I keep an old 3.47 installed just in case I have a disc image that does not contain the copy protection. I own a copy of Alcohol 120% though as it can copy the copy protection (if you set the right settings, trial-and-error in some cases) so I can then mount the image directly through anything that supports the mds format and get the copy protection with it without needing Daemon Tools or anything else to emulate it.
I hate discs with an undieing passion (which is why most of the stuff I own now is through Steam or Impulse) so I make images of anything of mine I use. I have only used my disc drive once in the past year, and that was to make an image of my A2 disc before I installed the latest Fleet Ops.

I recommend that you use MagicDisc; it's free, it works for most image types, and it's small and safe, even if it does look like it was made in someone's basement. It's what I've had to use, or rather I've had to use images in general, since my notebook's internal CD/DVD drive bit the dust because the ATA cable failed.
You only get the toolbar if you don't unselect it while installing the program. As for spyware, I've been using this program since oh maybe 2001 with any trace of spyware originating from the program.

Same thing, I have no run into this so called spyware and I always keep my programs up to date. Must be something else on your system (or you didn't unselect the toolbar)

It is the toolbar.

Ok....first off, I got it to work. I just put all the installation's on XP compatibility mode and chose "Run as Administrator"....even though I'm logged on as the true administrator (Which begs the question why all-mighty Microsoft decided to put that option in the real admin account!?!). After doing that, it installed without a hitch and the NOCD worked. Yeah....I've once more gotten out of having to use any sort cd drive emulation. God I hate things like daemon tools, alcohol, etc etc. Why would anyone use them when NOCD's work more (usually), take up less space, and have zero chance of screwing any settings up unless you were dumb enough to dl a virus?!

Plenty of games no cd cracks work, also for people who have entire archives of games backed up on hd can easily just mount the image you already have.

It does try to give you a toolbar, but if you dont whiz through the screens it offers you the chance to not install it.

I tried a NOCD patch, and it didnt work. An image mounter does take more space, but as long as it supports the copy protection that the game uses, it will let the game run as well as install it too!

I prefer emulation....nocd cracks often have things hidden inside of them. Personally its just easier for me mount images since I back up all my gems....especially since most the games I play u cant get anymore or have to pay and arm or leg for to get them. Also with nocd cracks I belive often times if u play online you have to have the same crack file as the other players which can lead to problems.
Everyone has their prefered methods....
But dont think that just cause you use "this or that" its safe or virus free. Especially if it doesent make u pay for it. And extra especially if you aquired it thru "un-oficial" means.

First off, I've never found a nocd with a virus or any other type of software embedded in it. But maybe that's just me....I'm not dumb and I know what to look for. Second, just because some of us prefer nocd cracks doesn't mean we don't own legal copies. Remember, anyone can be using a pirated copy, whether its a mounted iso or a cracked executable. As was stated in the beginning, I bought this game when it first came out and I cannot find my disc for it. I have my Star Trek Armada 1 disc.....heck, I still have my Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity disc. I know you didn't directly question any of our legitimacy but I still felt the need to clear the air.

I wont post what to do to get a nocd patch to work with FO as there is some controversy....however if u do a forum search you will find the answer within 10 minutes. Im not sure bout this part but..if you use a dif nocd crack than someone else it will break mutiplayer.

no, it won't break multiplayer. that applies to armada 2 but not fleet operations...
