Do you have Nvidia graphics card and latest drivers? Old drivers for GF500 series used to have similar issue.

Is the Interface turned on? Try pressing Ctrl+I a few times, I use Windows 7 and the game works fine for me.

update drivers. zebh identified the problem from the distinctive screenshot straight away, gtx 4xx/5xx cards are famous for this issue.

there was a driver update that fixed it a while back.

let us know if you can't/don't want to update drivers, as there is an unsupported workaround, but that's last resort.

that's very troubling, this issue was believed to be fixed, if it has started again then i'm glad i didn't get a gtx 500 series card.

for now you can use a workaround, take note that the devs have explicitly stated that this workaround is unsupported, it's experimental and may cause other bugs to appear, especially in (but not limited to) the screenshot function and cursors. there are no advantages to using this workaround other than compatibility with the gtx 4xx/5xx cards, in fact you may very well get lower frame rates. this modification isn't permanent and you can revert it easily.

find the folder: %appdata%Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations

(type it into run and push enter)

in there should be a file called "fodata.ini"

open it with a text editor (eg notepad)

find the line D3D9=false and change it to D3D9=true

to undo the modification, change the line back to false again.

I got this GTX 520 card VERY cheaply but the windows drivers are very bad, no problems with the linux drivers.

I set D3D9=true

Then i ran game again, and crashed!

I then set all graphics settings to low, and found that the bump mapping setting was causing the crash.

IT WORKS NOW!!!

i've been doing some digging and i can find no record of a gtx 520 existing. only a gt 520. that's from the same family as the other cards that have this issue.

have you tried the drivers from the nvidia website: 32 bit/62 bit

those are the US english installers. the site has UK versions too: 32 bit/64 bit

i don't speak spanish.

I have the latest drivers, and the game works under WINE in linux, it's just these bad windows drivers that i keep having problems with.

The game just crashed again, it doesn't appear to have anything to do with the bump mapping after all, it crashes on startup sometimes, but never during a game.

when it crashes does madexcept bring up a dialog or does it just straight CTD?

if madexcept is working then can you submit the report/attach it.

if you choose to attach be aware the txt files can't be attached for some reason at the moment, you'll need to compress to zip.

As far as I know setting D3D9 is the only solution even if it causes some instability. I have fully upgraded Nvidia drivers and the same issue happens unless D3D9 is set to true. I do note that in addition to fodata.ini you also have to set D3D9 to true in Settings.xml if that file is generated.

I have the EVGA nVidia GT520 and Windows 7 Professional x64 and just updated the drivers and everything works fine. Maybe you need to update from the nvidia site directly http://www.geforce.com/Drivers
