Huge Problem installing the Mod

Hello, I've read about this mod and am a veteran fan of starmada 1 and 2, and I would love to play this, except for one problem.

I downloaded all three files I could find, including the latest patch and the media pack. I installed with the CD, everything was fine here. However, when I clicked on the exe to run, it told me there was a Direct3ddraw (or whatever it's called exactly) error, and to *please reboot*.

After rebooting, my monitor was forced into 640x480 and 4 bit color - neither of these options are even supported by my monitor. The lowest I can normally choose is 800x600 and 16 bit color. I could change it to 800x600 with 4 bit color, but anything with 16 or 32 bit would force me back down to 640, etc. etc.

Took me 2 hours to find a system restore point to reverse this problem, and I'm really not wanting to download this again if that's what is going to happen. If anyone can please offer some support I will try playing again.

Thanks,

Shyster

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

Can you please list your OS?

I've not heard about this issue before, so I'm just going to go through the few steps to see if this is what you did -

You put Armada II in your CD drive and first installed Fleet Operations 3.2.3 in a new directory.

Next you installed 3.2.6 over 3.2.3.

If you installed in your program files, you may want to try installing in a folder on your desktop if you are having UAC issues :)

Thanks for the quick reply :) I'm on windows XP.

But yeah, CD worked fine and I didn't have any account issues, I'm wondering if I should try it on my virtual machine.

I also forgot to mention above that while poking around in safemode my computer's resolution was fine. This confused me because I couldn't figure out what was going on in normal mode that was jacking it up.

Hm, might be worth a shot - I don't know what could cause this issue. Perhaps someone else has a better idea :) .

You might also try updating DirectX if you haven't in a while.

DirectX for windows XP shouldn't have had any updates in ages. As long as the version number says 9.0c it shoulda be the newest.

edit, constructive part of this post:

latest video drivers? I know, thats nothing groundbreaking...

Did you install Armada II first and then Fleet Ops over the top? It's been a while since I installed Armada II but I vaguely recall it offering to install an earlier version of DirectX (7.0 perhaps?). If you said "yes" then that may have caused problems.

The DirectX 9.0c package has some libraries that were updated after 9.0c was first released. It may be worth installing that anyway just to make sure you have all of them.

Yes, and they have pushed various bug fixes and other updates. So it probably won't hurt to install it. But yes, also make sure your drivers are current and all that good stuff.
