Hello.
As I said in another forum I do have some suggestions for you. I've been reading a lot on the forums and it seems to me that there are a lot of players that want to see more ships, especially for the Federation. Specifically some older ships seem to be requested a lot, the Maranda class, for example.
I was thinking about having an upgrade system. An old style Maranda class that can be upgraded to a Maranda 2. You could do this as part of a tech tree, or maybe a specialized station. You could also do the same with the Excellisor and Excellisor 2. Maybe even have a Scout Class that turns into a Runabout or a Peregrine. Perhaps even set it up so before the Tech is researched you build the lesser version and then after the tech is researched you build the newer version, but the ones already built stay the same.
For example, you build a Maranda 1 before the tech is researched. Then you do the research. Any new Marandas built are Maranda 2s, but that Maranda 1 that you build is still there. This would allow for those players that want more diversity in the fleets to be satisified while allowing the players that want all new stuff to be happy as well.
You could institute more ships. There are an endless number of fed ships in the movies that you have not put into the game for obvious reason. This type of upgrade system, if it is even possible, would allow for a place for all those ships. Oberth Class, here we come, lol.

In order for ship yards to do this they would have to massively alter the ships structure, weapons, engines, shields, sensors. It would be easier to construct a whole new ship

Actually that is their suggestion. They are talking about building new ships, not refitting old ones.
Once the "refit version" is researched, that's all you can build, you can no longer build the old version.
Makes sense, I guess.

A battle in fleet operations isn't really supposed to be 100 years of Federation science. I doubt any Mirandas or Excelsiors are being commissioned anymore.

It could work - there could be a "research Miranda II" button (for example) on the shipyard, which made use of the replaceweapon. The shipyard would then be replaced with a similar one that had the "Miranda II" build button in place of the Miranda I.
Problem is numbers of files: This would require (for just one avatar) two versions of the shipyard, but as soon as you try to add more than one replacement ship that number becomes four. Then seven. (Heh, all triangle numbers plus one).
And actually, this could be a nicer way of doing the mixed-tech stuff - rather than a new shipyard it could be a research station (or pods on a research station) which were required in the techtree before the above research could be undertaken.
Oh, and can you put a build time on a replaceweapon?
