OK OK i have tried every little thing and every map mode and all i can conclude that is in that great covnersion that FO is, you had to completely break the map making/multipayer options side of things... 
any map mode apart from mp-regular doesn't even show up as a choice of maps when you save it
if you try to give any unit to anybody as a starting it doesnt appear...
if you create an extra player and set it to AI Mission then they will show up but only as an enemy...
if you want player two to be an AI and with such and such starting units it also can't have them and they wont show up...
basically nothing works, so you cant make any decent just instant action maps...
however everything works lovely if you press ctrl+e, so i guess i can hand out maps, tell them to laod the map editor and press ctrl+e
if you guys know something i don't know, please share it

just checked that and it seems that you are right. there is an issue in the map filter so the map doesn't show up...

well i had a long talk with Optec and he helped a lot.
the issue about the filter, is that something that is fixable in the next patch, the most important being that the "mission" map makes it through, or "mp-assualt"?

i have further looked into the issue and it seems the map filter itself is fine, however the map editor doesn't save the map type correctly. you could use the old dialog as a work around. there is a button in the ctrl+r screen (i think in the last tab) that is even named 'old dialog'.
'mp-assault' should be your way to go. 'mission' is explicit for the singleplayer campaign as far as i know

Hi Doca,
i had already worked otu yours wasnt workign properly and was saving it as mp-regular every time so i did use the old dialog and thens when i found out the map filter ignores all map types apart from mp-regular, well at least in 3.0.5?

you have to start a multiplayer game in order to be able to select maps other than mp-regular

ok Doca, you was right and it does show up... It's going to make testing a pain...
is there anyway it can be forced to use an AI as a player as only humans players can be used at the moment and this will ruin my idea of these being training maps for new players if i can't shove an AI at the other end,lol...

i have no idea... i never have looked into these game modes a lot. what doesn't work now? aren't you able launch the game at all because of a human player missing or is it something else?

ok ok, i attempted to do some testing with baron with a really basic map...
its just an empty map with 4 starting unit each for each player...
but the game wont launch because we havent selected our starting positions but at the same time it wont let us chooce them either... and i cant pick random... it stuck on fixed and the starting points cna be seen but not selected?

hm, i don't really know. you could take a look into stock armada 2 and see how they did it. i think they had one or two assault maps too

ok i took a look at star armada 2 and im doing everything how they do it, i copied one over to star trek armada 2 flops and the map appears and positions are clickable but trying to open it in the map editor causes an instant crash...
deleting everything but start locations and opening it in ur map editor still causes it too crash...
so i think the problem is your map editor and how it saves it?

update
it turns out selection wasnt working because there was no matching minimap to go with it, so now all is good and working...
now all we need is away for the game to accept the AI as a human player and launcher the map

armada 2 maps are absolutely incompatible with fleet operations. even with no objects on them.
you could send me your map to my email adress and i will see what i can do about it
