Lately I've been testing Risner against the AI (crappy internet connection so no online play).
It seems you need to go carriers and/or Phalanx to survive. As it happens i loath both those vessels.
Do you have decent tactics to use as Risner against the AI?

The Akira rush from the Risner strategies page looks like a decent one to try. Spam the Akira with Intrepid/Monsoon for back-up.

I've been playing mayson so often i tend to do mixed intrepid, canaveral, nova hit and runs.
Akira rushes are something i rarely use.
Risner is an odd avatar. It's supposed to be the offensive federation choice, but it lacks the nova and Norway to make it a real offensive avatar.
When i play as federation i always hope for Dominion ally to use the Miranda 2 as defensive bulk.

Yup, Risner is actually a LOT weaker w/o spamming due to the lower defenseve value, defense is twice as important as offense for ship value. (or so testing has shown me)

Well mixed tech is only valid if its mid level or higher tier ships, feds are lucky with dom mix tech that they get the Miranda2 (plus defiant flavors for klink/rom), the races that have mostly earlier stage mixed tech ships you gotta wonder why they even HAVE mixed tech, as it takes so long to research, nearly seven minutes, that by the time you get more than 1-2 the enemy has critical mass, and transitioning to them later ingame is even worse due to that time window.
I think the quote in my sig sums it up.

have you tried sovereigns? Although I have heard that they are suppose to be "support" ships, they are great as an offensive ship with their special. It probably is one of the best ships in fleet ops...

sovvies arent solely supports to me. they are mainline ships. they hit hard with those big torps. and they can take some serious damage. and if the enemy has lots of short range, put sovvies alone to tank.
their special allows them to be added to a fleet in small numbers for supporting roles. sadly due to their already massive defensive stats, they dont often get to tank with ablative armour. pretty much every other ship in the game will get autotargeted first.
personally the defiant is so much more useful in a lot of situations that i dont see a huge attraction to the sovvie. the e2 can just about get the job done against late tech big ships that are torpedo magnets. granted the sovvie is a bargain, but if you need ships fast, chassis 3 is a lot of time and money. i think that the e2 can usually hold your tech down in most cases. and when the enemy doesnt have torpedo magnet ships then just go for defiants, an all round incredible ship.
i just think that as a tank, the sovvie is never first to get shot, and the defiant has ablative armour as well. and as an offensive ship against large opponents the e2 is really good, only 10 slower than a sovvie, and punches slightly weaker. but then the money you could have put into chassis 3 can get you 1 or 2 e2s. the sovvie usually gets put out for its special. it does an ok job as a mainline ship, but sadly i can see why people are reluctant to use it for anything but its special.
its also easy to underestimate just how tough a sovvie is, its defence is massive, a sovvie in a defensive posture (pretty easy posture for feds to pull off) can be an incredible asset. if you can cycle sovvies through yards and keep the enemy from taking out your mining, you can gain a foothold and not be kicked out of a game.

Sovvies are awsome, but the problem is they're end tech.

There may be a few maps it COULD work on, but not many, and if the maps balanced it'd make the AI spam 10%cost ships that much easier.

Sovvies are what you field against defiants. A sov-Akira mix is deadly to any race which relies heavily on short-range vessels
