This is a list of strategies that should never be played or you WILL loose.  Feel free to add to this list.  This is a list of basic no-no's.

Number 1:
Never start the game by building a starbase at the only entrance to enemy space.  Regardless of whether or not you can put turrets there.  You will waste your resources and will not be able to build up a fleet to resist the opponent when they come.

Number 2:
Never replace the early E2 start with an early Avalon start.  You won't be able to build any ships, not even Sabres.  And when the enemy comes, resistance will be futile.

Number 3:
If you've knocked out the enemy mining, don't stop knocking it out.  The enemy will recover and destroy your entire fleet, even if you are building a fleet as well.  Destroy the mining, and keep them destroyed!  But don't relax for a second.  One mining operation left over is all it takes to recover.

actually on stupid maps number 1 works fine, it is an annoying strategy though, so dont do it. maps that are really small allow you to place starbases at the enemy exp. if the enemy base has only 1 entrance that is a chokepoint, then you could starbase it easily with borg, as the borg constructor is so tough.

number 3 is just general advice never to let up pressure, even u if u crush their mining once, then leave them, you should still be able to expand more than them and would win by a slight margin, of course repeatedly hitting them will make the margin bigger :)

How wrong you thought  :P

There were two people on one team doing that two hours ago even though I was klingon and just moving past their oh so passage-blocking base. :woot:
And for my borg-ally and his scoutcubes, the other base wasn't much of a problem either while these moved past their obstacle...

Cockblocking with a starbase in a chokepoint can actually be pretty effective, but unless it's a pretty small map or what not it only really is something worth doing mid to late game.

If done correctly and the other player is caught semi off guard by it, it can even turn the tide.

Ive seen people miss a base due to multiple mid to large engagements elsewere on the map, they go to attack back, suddenly their fleet runs into a fleet+base, and the fleet then comes to THEIR base.

But you have no base, most maps are made with more than one entrance to your base, and at almost all points during the game im going to have enough firepower to destroy a single constructor before it can build an SBase

The only time this can really happen is when Feds are playing against Borg as Feds have the fastest-moving builder and Borg have the slowest time to get out their first warship.

You can also do it on certain maps without regard to the faction too (well, except Borg) - one of the tactics on Asteroid Halma is to board up 3/4 of the middle with a starbase or 2 and stick sensor stations near by...

Avalon Rush is fine and epic imo. I usually go Akiras + Avalons ever since the new patch. A veteran Avalon can kyte quite nicely too.  :shifty:
