What do you think of the non-canon ships from Star Trek: Dom

What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

For all the negative things that can be said about this lackluster Gizmo Games title, I have to admit, Dominion Wars houses some of my absolute favouite non-canon ship designs... For those who don't know about them, have a look at this webpage... Click on the button marked "ship profiles" to see (as the name suggests) profiles of the ships that were in the game... Most were canon, but a few weren't and these are labled as "new design!"

Untitled Document

In my opinion, right from the start it's clear a great deal of thought and effort went into these designs, as the "Art Director's Notes" for the various classes over on the (still running) offical Dominion Wars webpage will attest... These designs weren't just thrown together to give the faction a greater variety of units, no, a lot of love went into making them and it shows...

If I had to pick a favourite, it'd probably come down to a toss-up between the Cardassian Norin class and the Dominion Strike Cruiser... The Hutet's nice as well, but I've never really been a fan of huge, lumbering ships... I don't know why... The Tonga's pretty good as well... A little rough around the edges, but the Tonga's backstory (it's apparently a converted freighter or tug of some kind) rather lends itself to that anyway...

I'm not a huge fan of the Dominion Carrier and the Achilles class is little bizzare, but the only one I really don't like is the Klingon K'Vort'Cha, the ugly unoriginally named bastard child of the B'Rel and Armada's Raptor...

Those are my opinions, but what do you think about these designs?

Yes all the new designs they had were great - especially since they didn't just make them for looks, but for practicality. Check the Designers notes link on some of them.
Also, see how well the Klingon, Dominion and Federation designs fit that factions general style by checking out their scale section.

"ST Dominion Wars" was a great concept for a videogame its such a pity that it came with so many flaws.

I absolutely loved the achilles and the hutet, I hope one day we'll see them in FO as well :P

i like the achillies, but personally i would like to see more of the older ships in fleet ops, and some mentioned but not seen to well, like the new orleans class and the uss titan, and some new ones two

Freedom & Niagara Class. To hell with anyone whining about 1 & 3 nacelles being against Roddenberry's law.

As far as I'm concerned, three out of four of Roddenberry's designs laws do not apply, for the simple reason that the Freedom, Niagara, Raven, Defiant and the Lakota variant of the Excelsior are all canon... The first two violate his "in pairs" rule, the Raven and Defiant violate his "nacelle line of sight" rule and the Lakota variant Excelsior violates the "fully visible from the front rule" (indeed, even the standard Excelsior does this to a lesser extent)...

So yea, if anything, these design "rules", if the Federation shipyards ever followed them, at best had to do with the efficiency of the nacelles (that is, the warp engines would work better if the rules were followed, but it wasn't strictly neccessary to do so)...

As for the fourth and final "rule" (regarding the placement of the ship's bridge)... Purely asthetic... There's absolutely no functional reason why starships should have their bridges at the top and center of the primary hull, none whatsoever... Indeed, many people deride this as one of the almighty failings of Trek ship designs, even though most of the rest of science fiction has it just as bad or worse (see those massive bridge towers on Imperial Star Destroyers, for example)...

But with regards to the Wolf 359 designs, I like the Freedmon, but I've never been a fan of the Niagara... The others are mostly just "OK", in my book... Acceptable, but hardly fantastic... Except the Springfield, that one's pretty horrid, quite frankly... I kind of like the New Orlenas, though...

The Hutet was awesome, I really was hoping it would be in stock A2 when I heard the Cardassians were playable. But alas they were not, and the stupid missle thing ended up being their super weapon....

I love the Norin alot...

I didn't even know about the Hutet when I got Armada2. I can see it as a good Super Ship.

yeah. has been suggested to include the hutet in the cardassian tech tree (if that ever gets off).

hutets were very cool models. Pure eye candy. Cardassian Tavaras :)

I wasn't really that fond of the Cardassian designs in DW. I preferred the ones from BOTF.

As for the Achilles, hmm... I used to think the Defiant was a ship designed for cool battle clips, but it's nothing compared to the Achilles in the DW intro movie, hehe. Really cool.

The only ship I really liked from DW was the Dominion Strike Cruiser (the little one with the heavy polaron cannon in the front). Not sure why though...
