Torpedo Guidance Systems

What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

My point is, where do you draw the line on realism?  The scenarios I suggested are realistic.  Who decides what is realistic in the Star Trek universe?

But I much prefer realism over balance.

This focus on game balancing (and pretty graphics ) is what sets FO far above all the other A2 mods out there.  I can go over to A2 files and get "Basement Bob's realistic Star Trek mod" whenever I want. :P  What Basement Bob doesn't have for me is a thriving online gaming community where I can pretty much play a game 24/7.  With FO, I can almost get a 1v1 any time I want, and during peak hours, we can get 3v3 and 4v4 games going.  Because the game is well balanced, people are free to play any faction they choose.  FO is a cut above the rest because the devs understand the bigger picture that players should be considered first when it comes to game design, not any one ideal.

It also has to do with what we consider realistic.  As I've stated before, there are all kinds of realistic "features" you could add to a game that would destroy the game.  So where do we draw the line?  And I think Optec (and everyone else) has provided a pretty good defense as to why ECM would work, especially considering we see torpedoes in the show working like they do in FO, as they do not home in on their target, unless they have a special like guided quantums.

So what you're asking for is already there, just not the way you want it. :)

Je suis fait. ^-^

You can't prove that something's impossible full stop....

who knows how all that theoretical tech & counter-tech mesh together in a battle?  My hypothesis:

The torpedo's are programmed to home in on a target and detonate.
- ECM leads the torpedo to believe that its about to strike its target, when it is not.
- The torpedo goes through the sensor ghost, aka counter-measure interference, thus disabling its guidance sensor as the torpedo assumes that it has already reached its target, and doesn't need it anymore.
- The torpedo's detonation sensor does not sense an impact or impedance, causing the torpedo to continue flying past, since the targeting sensor thinks its already struck its target, but the detonator is still waiting for it to strike its target. (another possible side-effect of counter-measure static)
- The torpedo sails through empty space until colliding with something random (space-station, planet with primitive life etc...), running out of energy and self-destructing, or becoming derelict...

(ECCM on Canaveral for example, would cut through the ECM and guide torpedo to true target, while enhanced guidance on Excel-II warheads would cause the impact sensor to double-check with the guidance sensor and re-target if necessary...  or something like that.)

Are there any electronic-warfare techs in here?

actually the canaveral has EC[sup]3[/sup]M which means it counters ECCM which counters its ECM.

ECM makes stuff miss the canaveral

ECCM makes stuff hit again.

EC[sup]3[/sup]M makes it miss again

They don't?  :D

Only the officers?  As usual the poor red shirts are just treated like cannon fodder and their families go uninformed

Is it derail time yet?

This thread derailment is running on time, arriving at platform 47 in 2 minutes.

>>Somebody has placed a heavily-soiled couch on the tracks, delaying the train<<

I forgot about that third 'C', and I don't like it.
All it does is exactly what an over-powered ECM suite would do...  Bah, I still want my mobile radar jammer, err, I mean "Warp-Capable Minimap Scrambler."

Keep your ECM, I'll settle with the infinitely superior 'Bat Torpedo repellent' spray.

Ok but Chuck Norris captains my ship, do you think you have repellent for that........

'Bat Chuck Norris repellent', never leave Spacedock without it.

You mean a thermonuclear weapon. That's the only thing that gets rid of chuck, and he only leaves so he can go get some meat to bbq on the fire.

thermonuclear weapon? why not simple photon torpedo?

Because the guidance system might be fooled by Chuck's ECM, or as I like to call it, his theme song. :whistling:

"For the eyes of a ranger are upon you..."

the torp would be distracted by fear of impending chuck, and forget to detonate, harmlessly bouncing off his armour plated forehead.

That armor plating is otherwise known as his suntan. He goes for to tan everyday but unlike you and me he just walks into the local nuclear reactor to get his.
