Next Batman Film Coming July 20th 2012 – 3 Weekends After Star Trek Sequel

The 2005 film  Batman Begins, was often held up as a model for how the 2009 Star Trek film could successfully bring back a franchise. And in 2012 it looks like the new crew of the Enterprise will be taking the caped crusader head on as Warner Brothers just announced they will release their next Batman film three weeks after the next Star Trek film. Image

Batman Returns July 20th 2012

n 2005 Warner Brothers successfully rebooted the Batman franchise with Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale and helmed by Christopher Nolan. And in 2008 they came back with The Dark Knight which brought in $533 Million domestically (and $1 Billion worldwide), making it the highest domestic grossing film not directed by James Cameron (and #5 globally). It has long been assumed that Warner was going to land the next in the series during the Summer of 2012, and today WB made it official by picking July 20th for the release (on regular screens and IMAX), which will be almost exactly four years after The Dark Knight. According to E! Bale will be back under the cowl, under the direction of Nolan. No start date has been set for production and the plot has yet to be locked down. David Goyer is working with Nolan’s brother Jonathan Nolan on a script.

This date will pit Batman, Star Trek and Spider-man together in July 2012. Here is how the mid-summer of 2012 looks so far.

It is interesting that Warner Bros. chose July 20th, leaving the 13th open. Apparently they wanted to leave some breathing room between their release and the Spider-man and Star Trek films. Star Trek’s biggest competition for the 4th of July weekend continues to be the Spider-man reboot, although that film is reportedly going to have a lower budget than previous Spider-man films and is starting over with a new Spider-man and new director, with a story focused on Peter Parker’s high school years.

The Star Trek movie went into May 2009 with what looked like serious competition, going up against Wolverine, Angels and Demons, Terminator: Salvation, and Night at the Museum 2. Despite some gloomy early predictions, in the end, Star Trek beat all those films domestically, and all but Angels & Demons globally.

One of the big tests for the next Star Trek film will be how it performs globally compared to other tent pole films, like Batman. In November TrekMovie talked to JJ Abrams about his thoughts on the international performance of Star Trek, and he pointed to how The Dark Knight made significant gains over Batman Begins internationally. Watch it below.

Clifton Collins Wants To Return For Star Trek Sequel

Clifton Collins, Jr., who played the Romulan Ayel in the 2009 Star Trek movie, is holding out hope that he will be back for the 2012 Star Trek sequel. TrekMovie thinks that isn’t very likely.Image

More Ayel for Star Trek sequel?

Clifton Collins, Jr.’s latest Star Trek comments come from an interview with Ace Showbiz. Here is the excerpt:

"Yes, absolutely 100%," he said when asked if it is possible that his character or his Romulan leader, Nero, will be seen in the follow-up to "Star Trek". Urging producer J.J. Abrams to use him again for the sequel, he told ASB, "Now please go and tell JJ!"

Unlikely

Although all things in sci-fi are possible, Collin’s Ayel was killed by Kirk shortly before Nero and the rest of the Romulans were squished into a wormhole in the 2009 Star Trek movie. And of course no Star Trek film has seen the return of villain characters played in previous film. On top of that, most reviewers of Star Trek felt that Nero and Ayel were not the most compelling villains. The Romulans were not thoroughly explored in the film, especially after the Klingon prison subplot scenes were cut. (That being said, you do get a much better view Nero, Ayel and the Star Trek Romulans in the "Star Trek: Countdown" and "Star Trek: Nero" comics from IDW).

So it seems that Ayel’s dream of Trekking again may not happen, or at least not as Ayel. As for Eric Bana, he has previously stated that he is not coming back for the Star Trek sequel.

Ayel falling to his presumed death (before Narada was turned into a black hole) – hard to come back from that

Special super romulan escape pod?  Please no.

He used his personal transporter that was on his belt to beam him to it instead of falling to his death.  EVERYONE knows that!

I loved the movie, the villans were crap; which means I don't care about Clifton Collins.  At least there was no Shinzon.

Shinzon was full of wasted potential.  Hopefully he's more interesting in the Fleet Ops continuity.

No, that would have been sucked in because the Enterprise couldn't even escape on warp speeds. Here is how he comes into the second story.

When he is shot and falls down, he is merely unconscious (the disruptor blast may not have been able to spread to the entire body, so he was unconscious from his body being in shock). He wakes up shortly before hitting the ground and taps on a button on his suit engaging the transport beaming him to another part of the ship.

Once the ship is trapped by a blackhole splitting the ship in half. He launches the escape pod headed for the singularity's center. Calculating that he'll travel through time just like how the previous black hole brought them into the past. He is shot back in time about 150 years before Kirk's existence (which the math points to be around the time of First Contact, when the Romulan race had Warp 3 capable craft according to some 'fanon' history). Basically the first thing that comes to mind is to make sure one day he has a descendant to avenge him. So he spends some time on his "Destined to die" homeworld making a family. After having 3 kids (1 son 2 daughters), he sets off to an attempt to become a scientist, knowing the technology of the Narada, he tries to help the Empire advance in technology, but dies in a laboratory accident attempting to recreate the missiles used on the Narada.

Then we come to Kirk's time again. By this time a descendant of Ayel who happens to be an Admiral of the Romulan Defense then crosses paths with Kirk. And he then recalls that his Grandfather told him that he should avenge the Narada. Then this Romulan becomes obsessed at having Kirk killed. Even some Klingons were hired to kill him in an attempt. But all assassination attempts fail (rather the Red shirt that happens to be next to Kirk gets killed  ).

And basically neither of them die so it basically continues from the movie onto any other future productions where basically Kirk's unknown Nemesis tries almost anything to have Kirk dead. And then we have a redo of the Wrath of Khan with a Romulan Commander hiring Khan as an Assassin, but Khan shares the fate of his Prime counterpart.'

If you wonder, the actor will play his Paradox-based descendant.

2012 will be a good year, the little hobbit is also coming I think .
Spiderman 4 will be crap, I never got really into those movies anyway.
Batman... okay, I liked that.
Do we know the name of ST XII ? They didn't call XI like that. I hope it won't be ST 2  :ermm:.
Hopefully they make a good story, I liked the one of the last movie, too, but it was not very deep, not really intelligent like Star Trek should be.

It'll probably be a remake of the second Star Wars film, just like the last Trek film was Star Wars 4 with some cosmetic changes.

star trek: the wrath of ayel

this time he will only get 2 lines before being killed.

i dont want more ayel, clifton collins hasnt realised one of star trek's invisible rules. only jeffrey combs gets to come back for more, if you are not jeffrey combs, bye bye.

obviously clifton collins isnt combs, so he cant come back.^^

You know who the villains for the next movie SHOULD be, right?  (And they shouldn't die at the end, either).

Kor.
Kang.
Koloth.

And let the Federation quake before them.

you know that would be interesting, have kirk get beaten up by two of them (one of them explicitly said he never battled kirk)

and the villain wouldnt have to die at the end. as we know all 3 of them survive to meet jadzia dax.

maybe curzon could make an appearance. the end of the film could be the start of the negotiations that curzon attended.

this is never gonna happen cos it doesnt involve earth about to be blown up

I wonder if Curzon or the terrible trio even exist in that universe... even the smallest change could alter an entire galaxy.
