indeed, thats why modern day money goes into making a missile more accurate, so with a smaller payload you can kill more of what you want dead, and less of what you dont (like random civilians nearby)

my point was that in the future, they must have some seriously badass ways of getting rid of life on planets, yet in trek they seem to be limited to WW1 scale.

Could always get captian nero to blow up some planets with his red matter.

Why should the future keep trying to 1-up the past in killing methods?

Its what we have done so far and i dont think it will ever stop, at least no time in foreseeable future.

Assuming that must be the way because it's how it works now is flawed, the future is filled with people who aren't us.

First you need to drill in, womrholes like it warm and cozy.

@topic: haven't there been nuclear tests vs naval vessels a few decades ago? In comparison to a city, especially to lil' japanese ones mostly made of wood, they withstood the blast pretty well - damaged, but not blasted in pieces.

the Second Khitomer Accords banned the use of subspace weapons

Just quoting, i think everyone gets the hint.

just my 2 cents

There was a test done after WW2 where they use a nuke on captured Japanese navy ships and old US ships to see  what the impact of a nuke on a naval force would have. First the detonated a nuke obove the ships but very few were sunk, some were pretty fubar but still afloat. They then detonated a nuke underwater an pretty much blew the hulls off most of the ships.

On a side note, the reasoning for Trek using terms like Isoton for explosions and quad when referencing data capacity was to purposly make them unknowns. The writers didnt want to come up with figures that would translate into real world numbers because as you see with TOS, tech that at the time the show was made might look way advanced, a few years later may look not so impressive. By todays standards a TOS communicator doesnt look very impressive (no screen!) but back in the 60's it was considered advanced stuff. To avoid this they made up a measurment system of their own.

Equinox, your reply makes too much sense, please come down to our level of non essential math and guessing.

Btw.: now i remember why i replied in the first place.

I was always wondering whats going to happen with those torpedos who dont hit. If the "canon" is correct and one could easily kill a city, and maybe even federation torpedos self destruct after a while, i doubt that all torpedos from all races do. Okay, space is big, but there might be millions, billions, well: a lot of torpedos flying around, and some hit a few pre-warp civilizations here and there. Same with all other weaponry... just a thought.

I would guess that most races would have their torpedos explode at some point if they miss a target just so another faction couldnt come along and find one and learn abouth their technology. So it would make sense just to detonate after a preset time (maybe once it ran out of fuel for its propulsion system).
