Any STO players been over to their site recently? Apparently, the higher ups have broken it... accounts deleted, CPoints unbuyable, ect. All without any kind of warning.

The regular forum-goers are somewhat... displeased.

what is it with sci fi MMOs at the moment? first the TORtanic sunk and now STO users are getting pissed off at their dev company. maybe it's overconfidence, they have so many users that they don't care about PR and keeping them happy.

PWE accounts are needed to use the game and forum and all of a users history seems to be reset back to 0. Crysptic Accounts can't even be used to log into the game, though characters are unaffected.

Whilst true, I should note that it's the perfect time to play the game really. Well, for some people (me included).

Server's are practically empty, especially in the low zones, so you can practically treat it like a single player game. I only ever wanted the game for the story - loved KOTOR I and II - and it delivers that by the bucket load. Nowhere near enough to serve as a viable MMO; but as both a Star Wars game and an RPG it's excellent. Worth the price of a basic edition and a couple of months sub (about £45 all in all, could probably be cheaper with careful shopping).

I've not logged in to STO for ages. The game was alright, but quickly became too repetitive for my taste. May give it another spin eventually. I wonder if all this is the result of the account linking going on at the moment. Mayhaps someone has fiddled with the wrong number in a database somewhere and flagged all of the wrong accounts.

I don't like any RPGs, online or offline, so I'll skip TOR. I'm also not a fan of being forced to pay for the game medium (disk usually) then being made to pay MORE for shit afterwards, like DLC or subs. Online play and DLC should be free if you expect us to fork out so much money for the original game, that's part of the reason I hate M$ and their xbox platform. MMOs like WOW/TOR are the only time I'll lower this expectation due to the server costs of keeping a persistent world going, but I don't play them anyway.

I'm only an outsider to this, but when I heard that TOR's devs/their puppetmasters EA had removed the button to cancel subscriptions, I was incensed, that's like the security guard at Tesco refusing to let you leave until you buy more stuff.

To each their own. Personally, it's my favourite genre.

I'm kind of in agreement. I'd never pay for a gold subscription to Live. I don't play online anyway, but that's not the point. If Nintendo and Sony can offer it for free, then so can Microsoft. Server costs, as you rightly say, are a different breed all together.

I am, however, prepared to pay for DLC if it's worth it. The Fallout/New Vegas ones are worth it; but a lot of the Mass Effect 2 stuff was fluff content at best and Pay-to-Win at worst.

Hmm, the option is still there on my account page; and I'll admit I've never heard of it. Perhaps it was changed again recently?

This is only marginally connected to the topic at hand though, so apologies for the partial derailment  .

It was taken away temporarily when they released that unbalancing patch:

When a person posted a workaround on the forum (they hadn't removed the ability to cancel, just the button url to the cancel page) he got his thread deleted by the mods as 'spam'.

EVE-Online is still as awesome as it ever was, and Anarchy Online is bimbling along merrily as well (although the latter always felt like a reskinned fantasy MMO).

As for the recent STO website revamp ... well, this was coming. PWE own Cryptic now and it was only a matter of time before the website was integrated into their portfolio. Yeah, the changes are pretty unpleasant, especially for those who have lost forum accounts with post counts and registration dates back to 2009, but it'll smooth out and blow over soon enough.

This behaviour is one of many reasons I will not open my wallet for TOR.
