Star Trek Brings In $7 Million Thursday Night + Online New Ticket Buyer Polling Data May 8, 2009
by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Star Trek (2009 film) , trackback
The critics love it and the fans love it (based on our current poll), so the big question remaining is, will the rest of the film going audience love it. We won’t know that until the weekend is over, but the numbers are in for Thursday and they are very good. Star Trek racked up $7 million dollars last night in domestic tickets sales. More below, including interesting polling data from the online sales sites.

A big Thursday
Star Trek’s early shows on Thursday night were a hit, with Variety reporting it brought in $7M from the 7PM-midnight shows. To put that in context, last May Paramount opened Iron Man with some early Thursday shows and it brought in a bit over $4M, but went on to rake in a total of $98 Million for its opening weekend, and went on to be the the second highest grossing film of the year with $318 Million domestically. Also last weekend Wolverine kicked off its huge weekend with $4M from just midnight shows on Thursday (although Wolverine played in 6.5% more theaters than Trek).

This is all good news for Paramount as day 1 was a success, but these are only tea leaves. Last night was the fan base going out in force, but the real test will be the main movie going audience for this weekend and then to see if the film has ‘legs’ going into the rest of the summer facing off against Angels and Demons next weekend and Terminator 4 the weekend after that.

The Variety report had this note of caution:

Based on tracking, Par, along with some of its rivals, doesn’t expect "Star Trek" to come close to "Iron Man’s" opening gross, or even the $85 million earned by "Wolverine" last weekend. Nonetheless, a number of films have overperformed in recent months.

STAR TREK polling data
Both of the big online ticket sales sites have shared their recent polling data with TrekMovie.com

Fandango polls Trek fans
Online ticketing site Fandango has been running an online poll of Trek Ticket buyers. 91% of those who chose to take the poll consider themselves Trek fans (note: most ticket buys do not participate in the optional poll). MovieTickets data: high awareness with women
Also MovieTickets.com has been conducting an online poll of female ticket buyers (Apr. 21 – May 3) and 52 percent are aware of the film “Star Trek” with 63 percent of those aware of the film intend to see “Star Trek” opening weekend. According to MovieTickets, this is the highest pre-release polling numbers for females at MovieTickets.com for 2009

Additionally, the film is tracking well across all age groups at MovieTickets.com, save 60-plus. Three of the five age groups polled Apr. 21 – May 3 boasted intent to see opening weekend numbers over 70 percent, including 25-34s (70%), 35-44s (76%) and 45-59s (78%). Under-25s are currently at 58 percent, while 60-plus is at 11 percent.

Perhaps we could somehow merge this and Star Trek Armada II: Fleet Operations - fleet ops and star trek xi story (spoliers from the movie so be warned) ?

That thread has a lot of discussion about the movie that would fit here, as well.

I promised to make a flow up poll from Star Trek Armada II: Fleet Operations - Poll: 1st take: ST XI

To see if peoples expectations met the mark this is that poll.

I only thought maybe the posts from the other thread could be moved here just to have everything in one place. This would make this one the primary thread as the question asked in the other thread has already been answered and the rest is just discussion about the new movie which would fit here better. :)

I liked the change on the way the film was handled more of a human face, frailty, courage, fear, jokes.

Good job all around I voted I wet my self 2 times!! Go trek!

I loved it.  Impeccable.  As I'm from Iowa, the car chase scene meant a lot to me.  Everyone in the theatre laughed when the location title popped up in the top left.

For those who didn't bother to read the thread's title, this is your Spoiler Alert

What I Liked:  They rolled out all the good TOS Trek plot devices.  From Spock getting the hottie to Kirk fighting the alien monster alone and unarmed.

The character portrayal was brilliant, especially between McCoy, Kirk, and Spock.  They were able to capture the magic and wonder that the original cast had.

I loved how they didn't get bogged down in all the convoluted garbage that the last few Trek series had going.  This show was about people, and the choices we make, and how our feelings often dictate our actions.

Some things I didn't like:  The story of how this all happened was a bit fuzzy to me, and maybe I missed it.  Spock's explanation went pretty fast.  So a supernova threatens the entire GALAXY?  And they just find out about it in time to avert it, but can't save Romulus?  Ok.  And Nemo's pissed because it's all Spock's fault?  And a blackhole that will send you back in time in the beginning of the movie will destroy your ship at the end of the movie?  Mimesot is going to have a field day with this one, is all I can say.  I'll leave the physics to him.

Also, considering the timeline has been altered, you would think Spock would go to Starfleet Command or anyone and say, hey guys, your timeline is all screwed up.  Thankfully, I’ve gone back in time at least four times already!  I’m an expert at fixing this timeline stuff!  Just give me a ship and a sun to sling it around and I’ll have you guys up and running in no time!  But no.  We don’t see any of that.  Vulcan is no more, and that’s that.  Kind of lame. :ermm:

Maybe a third thing is that engineering was filmed in some warehouse factory, instead of maybe creating an engineering deck.  It doesn’t even have to have a warp core, just make it look somewhat similar to the old TOS deck.  At the end of the movie, Scotty’s running through this warehouse screaming, “I’m givin’ you all she’s got, Captin!”, but it’s like the actor really didn’t know how to make the line work with the set he was given.  The only thing to “tinker” with was a small screen panel.  Scotty needs a huge console that he can move a whole bunch of buttons around like he’s doing something, or a Jeffries tube with a spanner, banging away as hard as he can on some open panel, which all of a sudden makes everything work.  They didn’t really give him that.

To be honest, all those issues are forgivable because it was so damn good.  It was a nice clean break from the crap we’ve been served for several spin-offs now.  I would give this movie a solid A-  for the fact that they were able to recapture the spirit of the original series, and that counts for a lot in my book.  A Nero-sized spear thrust to the monstrosities created by Berman and Braga.

Let me see if i can help here, your right about the star going Supernova and Spock going to create a blackhole to suck it all in... The reason Nero (not Nemo, his not a fish...) is so pissed with Spock is because Spock made a PROMISE he would save Romulus and the reason he is pissed of with the federation is they just stood around and did nothing whilst Romulus perished....

it wasnt actually the black hole that destroyed the ship at the end but the fact ALL of the red matter went off at once in the middle of the ship creating the event horizon in the middle of the ship, so half was one side and half wasnt, plus the enterprise firing all its weapons didn't help...

The reason it is pointless for Spock to go through time is because as soon as he arrives through his blackhole (remember he arrives 25 years later after Nero does) he is captured straight away and dumped on a planet he can watch his perish from. He can't go to the future again because Nero is still there changing the past so his future wouldn't be the same if he went straight back unless he got Nero to go with him, also the moment Nero destroy Vulcan his future is no more from that point onwards anyway... the only way he could possibly stop any of it would be to either jump through time again before Nero arrives and stop him or jump just before Romulus is destroyed and save it... Basically my point is, it all gets really messy and trekkified to a hardcore degree and becomes hard for the average person to follow and defeats the object of trying to make star trek more accessible to a new audience...

I kinda preferred its industrial look, the clean engineering rooms have always driven me crazy, hated them because they havent felt like an engeering room at all, but you do see dillithium chambers/cores (thats the trick, there isn't one, there was about 6), they are the huge silver/white containers and Scotty does eject them to make an explosion. Though your right it would of been better to see the engineering room in betetr detail

As you have stated already, it was a wicked film that was driven by Character development and not technobable garabage and i believe it was agreat new opening for star trek. If you wanna get nit picky about things, you wanna get nit picky over the fact there was 3-4 sighting of "Lightening in space and a black storm" but only two times a ship came through space, Nero and then Spock :S...

Or the fact that Kirk saved 800 lives when only 15-20 shuttles escaped holding about 100 each so more 150-200... Especially sicne the Kelvin was too small to even hold 800 people....

Wow. I just got back from the cinema.

'Tis an awesome movie. I really loved what Abrams made it out to be.

Now I have two questions:

1. When can we expect the sequel?

2. Where does Star Trek as a franchise go from here? The reboot was far more than just successful, so I'm hoping for a new TV series. Maybe the writers even learned not to write themselves into corners the last time :P

heh, 10% will go in costume...that was an understatement.  Even I somewhat went in costume.  I was wearing a red shirt that said expendable on it. :D  There were lots of other people, mostly dressed like Spock.
