Question about starship naming legacy.
What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

Just a thought....
We all know that we have Enterprise then A, B, C, D, E most of them being different classes but all sharing the NCC-1701 A B C yaddah....
My question is this. There was a constitution class Starship called the U.S.S. defiant TOS era. Shouldn't that mean that the defiant from DS9 era should share her registry? Because they do not.
Or do only ships of the enterprise line share a common registry?

I'd imagine only ships that gets sufficient fame get a lineage, otherwise it's just a name. The Defiant Class one wasn't a replacement for the Consitution like the Enterprise's were, and the TOS Defiant was never implied to be anything special.

I think that the ship must directly be a successor to get the sequencing suffix. For example, if 30 years passed with no Enterprise, the next one would just be USS Enterprise. A new commissioning, rather than a direct successor/replacement.

As far as I remember, it was never called defiant class either. according to the Dominion wars game, it is the Escort Class. and didn't it get destroyed, and another ship named the defiant instead of the defiant A?

Class shouldnt matter for lineage like this. Every star-ship to bear the name enterprise was a different class after the constitution versions.

'Escort class'? Somewhere out there, is the USS Escort? Starfleet commissioned a hooker-ship? And put huge guns on it so it doesn't need a pimp?

The name Defiant Class was likely a background thing (unless they said it in speech or a graphic I missed), like the Akira, Norway and several others. It holds more weight than a game calling it by its type.

hmm, true. but in the case of the defiant, the original disappeared, so maybe it doesn't count?

Ezri said when they got the USS Sao Paulo (which they renamed to Defiant) that she didn't know they were getting another Defiant-class ship...
Also, the class tends to be named after the prototype (Excelsior, Galaxy, Prometheus etc) so it would make sense that it be called the Defiant class....'Escort' seems like more of a classification...

Apparently, it was called a Defiant Class battleship on a display in the episode 'Drone'.
Disappeared, destroyed. In space, they're pretty much the same thing usually.

It actually said it in speech, along with the akira, galaxy, achilles, ect. not a canon source, but if they said something different in the show, then I guess it* is wrong.
Edit:it, being the game.

That makes more sense... Technically the second Defiant is a recommissioned USS Sao Paulo so it wouldn't be Defiant A. It was a replacement not a successor...

That approach didn't count for the Enterprise, since the A is apparently the renamed USS Yorktown. When the name was changed, it became the second Defiant and would have the proper number if they weren't lazy.

since they were of the same class I guess. same with the defiant.

Yeah they got a bit lazy with the Defiant replacement, since they reused footage that still had it with the NX-74205 registry in some shots...
But yeah, they did say 'Defiant class' in speech in the show
