Paramount Officially Delays Star Trek Sequel – GI Joe Takes 6/29/12 Spot & No New Trek Date Yet

Well Paramount has made official what we all knew was coming. The Star Trek sequel has been officially delayed and will not be released on June 29, 2012. Paramount has now put their second G.I. Joe film into that slot, but they have not yet picked the date for the Star Trek sequel. More info below, plus a poll on when you want the sequel to come out.
GI Joe 2 takes Star Trek’s summer 2012 spot
Today TrekMovie confirmed that Paramount has shuffled their schedule around and put G.I. Joe 2 (now called G.I. Joe: Retaliation) into the June 29, 2012 slot previously occupied by the (still untitled) Star Trek sequel. The G.I. Joe film was previously slated for August 10th. Paramount also made a small change with Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol (also co-produced by Star Trek’s JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk), moving it from December 16, 2011 to December 21st. This was to avoid a head to head with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on the 16th.
Paramount has yet to pick a new release date for the Star Trek sequel which should start shooting in January 2012. TrekMovie sources indicate that a decision has not been made and that it is in the hands of Paramount. The Star Trek team are ready for either of the choices on the table: holiday 2012 or summer 2013. A decision and announcement on that and on JJ Abrams directing should come in August.
As for why the Star Trek sequel has been delayed, much of this has been covered here at TrekMovie for the last few months but the simplest explanation is that in the end JJ Abrams (and his Bad Robot producing partner Bryan Burk) had too much stuff on their plate at once. In early 2010 when Paramount picked the June 29, 2012 release for the Star Trek sequel they had also tasked Abrams and Burk to produce both Super 8 and Mission Impossible IV (with Abrams also directing Super
by 2011. However, by the time the writers (Bob Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof) were ready to finish up the Star Trek script to move the film into pre-production earlier this year, Abrams and Burk could not devote the necessary time to Star Trek. So essentially the Star Trek project was put on a very slow burn for the last six months, but it is now back to the front burner for the entire Star Trek team of Abrams, Burk, Lindelof, Orci, and Kurtzman.
So when could it be?
As noted there are two choices for the Star Trek sequel release with the holiday season of 2012 or summer of 2013. Looking at those times there are a few weekends without a big tentpole in them. Recently Warner Brothers moved the next Superman film (Man of Steel) from December 2012 to Summer 2013, making the holiday 2012 season a bit less competitive.

Ray I understand how you feel I want this movie to come out next week if it could. But would you have another Transformers 2 or another Transformers 3? Because thats what we'll get if they do release it on schedule...a not so finished movie with plot holes everywhere. I would take TF3 anyday over TF2 wouldn't you? This is definitly a move for the better.

WAIT!
Wasn't that the LAST Jar Jar Abrams trek flick, the one with the supernova traveling at warp speeds.

Obviously wasn't going that fast. No idea how you got to that conclusion.

Obvious you were not paying attention to the movie.
Unnamed stars - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
Point 1: It was speceficly stated to 'threaten the galaxy'. A supernova would not do that unless it was traveling FTL.
Point 2: It was stated that it was the Hobus star, not the star in the Romulan home system.
That means it would have had to be going quite fast to be able to reach the system before it could be evacuated.
So a FTL supernova blows up, and spock has to create a black hole to dissipate the part of the blast wave hitting the romulan home world.......... which is quite odd since the Romulans are masters at MAKING black holes to power their ships.
Plot holes much ?

A supernova could threaten the galaxy if it destabilized an empire
Imagine what would happen if said empire decided to rage quit on the rest of the galaxy

Well to be honest, if the Romulans went nuts over that, the Klinks and Feds together could deal with them.
Besides at most that threatens parts of two quadrants, not a galaxy.
The fact is that a star blowing up and managing to destroy the capital of a major power is quite silly unless it is its own systems star, as it would be noticed, or it would simply be too far away to be a threat.

Wouldn't be silly if a rogue god caused it to explode, something on the same level as a Q could probably manage it.

Well that'd at least make trek sense, still a crap way to reboot the franchise however.

J.J. Abrams will direct Star Trek Sequel; Pre-production underway September 13, 2011

Back in July we reported on news that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams was "moving towards a commitment" to direct the sequel to the 2009 hit. Now comes news that Abrams has officially committed to the project.
Vulture confirms the news, reporting that pre-production on the sequel is currently underway. Even more important, the site reports that the script — written by Alex Kutzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof — is expected to be completed by the end of the month and Abrams will begin shooting the film this winter.
There’s still no update on when the sequel will be released. As we’ve previously reported, Paramount delayed it’s release earlier this year (it was originally set for June 29, 2012–now its TBD) and has already slated the G.I. Joe sequel in the former slot. There are rumors that the film could slide into 2013 (perhaps summer or winter).
Last month Abrams teased that an announcement was close:
Update: No additional details, but EW has confirmed that J.J. Abrams will direct the Star Trek sequel.

I actually liked the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie. After getting used to the fact that it was all an Alternate Reality and wasn't happening in the Star Trek Universe that we all have come and known to actually like. Just picture it as a Mirror Universe type of movie (or should I say now movies?).
The design of the new USS Enterprise NCC 1701 was alright, especially after you realize that the ship looks like that because the survivors of the USS Kelvin did manage to bring back scans of the the futuristic Narada and about its weapon capabilities making Starfleet increase the strength and power of their own ships and weapons.
In my opinion, the USS Excelsior NX-2000 (NCC-2000) designed by Jetfreak using the basis of the Alternate Reality Constitution-class is a better Alternate Reality Ship in my opinion (I have a saved picture of it if anyone wants me to attach it).
About the Super Nova though that destroyed Romulus, I think it was actually from a very close neighboring system to the Romulan Homeworld, as in not in the say system of Romulus (say the Romulus System), thus it destroying Romulus is quite possible then... hypothetically.

I've learnt that with Star Trek 11 and now Star Trek 12, to keep an open mind especially with opinions on the various forums and fan sites. It's a very sensitive topic for many fans. I personally like the movie and will sure like the next one, however many don't and don't keep an open mind nor a non-offensive stance to those who do like it.
As to Jetfreak's Excelsior, it is a cool design. He actually re-did a early concept version and turned it into a post-TNG design, one I promised him I will model for A2 down the line.
