Apparently, it makes them more 'stealthy' with a metal sheet over the engine.

or it just melts the metal lol.

Can you melt metal in space with a subspace engine? The Klingons would probably be amused at Starfleet ships melting themselves.

Those look like they are partly hidden by resembling vents and not glowing, which would fit with the Memory Alpha entry.

A careful inspection of the Nebula-class model reveals that it has no visible impulse engines. In a recent entry on Doug Drexler's weblog, Rick Sternbach indicated that he envisioned the ship's impulse drives as being hidden behind baffles to scatter their signature for stealth reasons. He added that "modern" Starfleet vessel impulse engines operated on little conventional rocket thrust anyways, being more of a sub-warp subspace drive.

which makes little sense then for all the "modern" modern trek ships to have huge impulse engines.....

Doesn't really, it was probably just a last minute excuse. It's more than the D'deridex got, they just left that one as "we had no time" when the stealth bit would work so much better with them.

i always figured the D'Deridex impulses where built into the back of the warp nacelles or sense it had a artificial quantum singularity as its power source it had "Gravitic" drive

It was intended to go on the 'tail' at the back, if Andrew Probert is anything to go on.
