New Star Trek canon is established in "Daedalus," the 10th episode of Season 4, which introduces us to the man who invented the Transporter.

His name is Emory Erickson, and in the story, he comes aboard Enterprise to test a radical new upgrade to the transporter technology he created a few decades back. He calls it "subquantum teleportation," and he believes it will render starships obsolete. But as the story unfolds, it turns out there is more to his visit than just research. The title "Daedalus" refers to the legendary inventor in Greek mythology who built the Labyrinth and artificial wings for himself and his son Icarus.

Erickson is played by Bill Cobbs, a 69-year-old African-American actor with a long resumé dating back 30 years. He's been in such movies as "The Cotton Club," "Demolition Man," "New Jack City," "Ghosts of Mississippi," "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," "That Thing You Do!" and "A Mighty Wind." He's appeared on numerous TV shows including The Outer Limits in the 1990s, The Sopranos and The West Wing. He was a regular on the TV series The Others and The Michael Richards Show, and recently played a recurring character on The Drew Carey Show named "Tony."

Erickson's daughter Danica is also a key character in "Daedalus," and she's played by Leslie Silva. Silva, among other credits, was "Sarah Forbes" in the sci-fi cable show Odyssey 5, which was created and produced by Manny Coto before he came to Enterprise. (We're sure her casting in this show is strictly a coincidence, though...)

After a long string of ambitious, expensive episodes, the cast and crew got a bit of a break in this installment with what is often called a "bottle show" — which basically means the story plays out almost exclusively on standing sets. Thus, there's nothing very elaborate to report about this production. The usual seven-day shooting schedule took place in all the familiar locales: the Bridge, Engineering, Ready Room, Corridors, Crew Quarters, Mess Hall, Captain's Mess, Launch Bay, Corridors, Armory and Sickbay. Two whole days were spent in the Transporter Alcove.

The visual effects crew led by Ronald B. Moore and David Takemura will also have it relatively easy on this show in post-production, though they still will need to reach into their bag of tricks as Erickson's experiments lead to some unexpected results on the ship.

On the final day of photography — last Thursday — Toolbox Productions made another visit to the set to shoot footage for upcoming DVD special features. They conducted interviews with Scott Bakula, Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, director David Straiton, director of photography Marvin Rush, and visual effects producer Dan Curry.

It turned out not to be the best day to do that, because a massive power outage in Hollywood ground things to a halt on the entire Paramount lot that morning. (Strangely, the weather was clear that day, though 24 hours earlier there had been heavy rains.) The crew got a generator behind the soundstage on-line, and power was restored to the production after two hours.

As mentioned, "Daedalus" was helmed by David Straiton, an Enterprise veteran since the first season. He last directed "Storm Front, Part II." The script was written by the two newbies of the staff, Ken LaZebnik and Alan Brennert (who is credited as Michael Bryant). This is the second writing credit for each of them; LaZebnik wrote "Borderland" airing this Friday, and Brennert wrote next week's "Cold Station 12."

The episode is tentatively scheduled to air December 17 on UPN. An unspecified repeat is set for the December 10 slot. Further repeats are scheduled for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, with the next new episode slated for January 7, 2005.

Further information on "Daedalus" can be found in Episode Detail.
