Ok you guys Mort just figured out how to get Armada 1 to work in XP! No graphic or sound errors!I just tested it and it works. Follow thes quick steps and you'll be runnin armada 1 smoothly!
1. Go to start and over to control panel.
2. Click on sound, speach, and audio devices
3. Chose Change Speaker settings or Sounds and Audio Devices
4. Under speaker settings chose advanced
5. Change tab to performance
6 Under Hardware accelration move the slider down to basic (2/4 the way)
Enjoy! Post and let this know if this worked and be sure to thank Mort!!!

I tried running a1 in xp years ago and it played at the correct speed and I managed to complete the game, but the sound was choppy, I never tried changind any of the suggested settings. (it was only my second computer)
Now I have a laptop with vista home premium and a1 runs fine with no need for tweaking
My laptop is Core duo T2350 1.86GHz with 2GB ram intel 945 embedded graphics. i did try creating a virtual machine with win98 to run it but performance wasnt good enough.
This suggests that vista can automatically sort the compatibility issues out.
Maybe this is just my computer being nice for once.

Yes windows vista runs armmada just fine (refer to thread Star Trek Armada II: Fleet Operations - star trek amada (thefirst)) but on xp it has had several graphics and sound errors. But this fixes it!

Its not integrated cards that have many problems its the nvidia cards that do, mainly the 8 series cards eg. the 8400, 8600, 8800 eg..
I had vista before and had problems on armada 1, i had sound problems and a fonts issues the writing was odd and almost unreadable.
In xp i have that and the graphics issue which seems to be unfix-able unless a patch would be release by nvidia which i find VERY unlikely.

@eraldo with the font issue i find that using the alternate font option in a1 in game options screen that they become more readable. so one actually knows how much dilithium one has
its still not perfect but its better than the old font.
