Why we like it
Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

There is a battle in hyperspace. You've got to face 4:1 odds and not stray too far off the beacon. It's easily the hardest fight in the game. I've "won" only to find out I had flown too far off and my poor guy didn't make it home.

Mal... now I'm REALLY tempted....
Do you get to fly anything big, or just Star Furies ?
Myles, maybe I misrememberd, but that DOES sound like something lucas arts would do.... I mean these were the guys that sued over mods on games almost as much as microsoft back in the day .....
Republic Commando is one of the few SW games that hasnt sucked since the X-Wing series was ended for no good reason.

Just Starfuries, but if you complete the campaign you unlock the Thunderbolt Starfury (the "newer" starfury that was a two-seater). You have to like dogfighting kinds of games, and this one uses real inertia, so if you go at X speed for Y seconds, you'll have to slow down the same amount of time to stop. In the instant action, you can fight Narn Frazi fighters, Centari fighters, Minbari Nials (the scary fighters with the lazor beams, one wrong move and you die in 2 seconds just like the show).
Also, there are a TON of fan made missions located on their forums that are decent. The mission editor is easy to understand for people who understand coding. I even made a pseudo mission, but I was biting off more than I could chew.
The storyline and voice acting are good, considering its free and mostly made by Russians. It's greatest feat is capturing the B5 feel. B5 was always representative of other nations besides the U.S., so you get different accents. Storyline has a B5 season 1-2 feel to it. It's exactly what flying a fury in real space would look like. You can even access a jump gate and fly through the vortex. Can't beat that!

This is sounding more and more awsome.
Now it just needs to be expanded for realistic (in B5 realism anyway) of capital ships as well.
To be honest Im suprised there hasnt been a B5 TC mod for Freelancer.

what about a real starfurry?

Capital ships are used in combat, but they are NPCs. Some of the player made mods utilize them more. I guess someone got it so you could run one of the cannons and partially control an Earthforce destroyer, but it's been a while since I've been on their forums and don't know how that's progressed.

Well to be honest, you shouldnt control more than flight control and main armament on any capital ship in this case, the rest should be automated or gunner controlled (IE: AI)
That said, orders, lots of orders, to issue.

In any event, the game is free and is like 300 mb or something, so its not like you're out anything to try it. Having a Joystick makes the experience better, of course.

Unfortunatly, Myles was right though... The time between tasks and just idle flying gets boring really fast.
Its a really nice sim, but I think freespace is better. I would like to see freespace with b5 ships.
that would be wayy cool.
