Awsome, although they are cheating a bit by using an existing device as a host, but still, it's a start. Actually though, this isn't the first "Tricorder": Real Tricorders

But when you think about it, the Nemsis era tricorder is probably only slightly thicker than an iPhone and yet it does everything from on the spot atmospheric analysis to subspace analysis to atom composition to medical diagnosis to life sign tracking for several kilometers. To be capable of all that and still be the size it is, the sensors must be absolutely miniscule, espicially when you consider that most of the sensing equipment is housed in the front portion only; the majority of the tricorder, as I understand it, contains processing, storage, and display components. We have a long way to go yet, but it's a start.

I don't think it will happen, fortunately or unfortunately with Apple, because the Ipod and associated devices are nothing new (aka, nothing original). Most of these assorted devices just stick together pieces of equipment from various already invented (and standalone) devices and then make a huge profit through the combination. That's the ingenuity part I'm afraid. Possibly the Droid... or maybe some other company which starts developing operating systems for these sort of things. Of course, it always could be that the tricorder is simply the receiver - the instruments are in the ship that's orbiting (think of GPS-like applets) :)

Captain: "Ensign...can we get rid of these helmets?"

Ensign: "Well... atmosphere shows a mix of Oxygen by 18% and some other harmless trace gasses - No Nitrogen at all, Helium hits 20 %!"

Captain:"Oh...that's going to be our funniest trip so far... lets..."

Ensign interrupts: "Sir, my tricorder also senses some increasing amounts of Methane and Ammonia..."

Captain:"How dare you! Who was that?!"

the perfect Idriod is the robot from I Robot (lol).

But im sure that tricorders work standalone, as we have seen them use in next generation with the ship in other systems.

Yes, probably correct. Too bad that it is not feasible for real technology, unless you are having the tricorder be pretty darn limited in scope.

Too bad the company that made the TR-107 went out of business.  Sounded like a nice instrument too.  I want a portable scan device that tells me everything about something damnit!  :crybaby: On a side note: Safari's spellchecker doesn't recognize the word "damnit."
