A little self reflection and awareness would be a start.
It's incredibly immature to say "Get a thicker skin, this is the internet". While there will always be trolls, taunters, flamers, rude elitists and so forth it is a show of maturity to look at ones own behavior online.

behavior online shouldn't be any different that in RL.

It's accurate though, anonymity does have an unfortunate tendancy to bring out behaviour that wouldn't normally show in real life. People get more gutsy and vocal when no-one knows who they are.

I think he is saying goodbye but I could be wrong.

It's incredibly immature to say "Get a thicker skin, this is the internet".

Um why is that immature? I don't know where you live but where I live people can be real assholes, usually worse then the internet. If you don't believe me try going to a George Webbs at 3 in the morning, people are pissed.

So I don't really see what the intent of this thread is other then it kinda seems like he wants a smaller more personal community but I could be way off.

To be fair, when I made my initial statement I hadn't seen Boggz and Arash's games.  Those could have been a turn-off to new players, but I also think that as gamers we should understand the kind of frustration Boggz was feeling. You can't get that upset about something you don't care about, and I know he truly cares about this game.

Please don't wonder if all Fleet Ops is like that, by necessity there is a double standard between brand new players and people who are stretching the limits of game balance.  In some cases people need to voice their frustration, otherwise the game balance doesn't advance and improve.  We certainly don't do that in front of the noobs.

This post has something to do with commentaries.  That's about all I know.  I like you, Dexter, but this probably could have been solved by a few well placed PMs.  Then you could expressly state your feelings and actually create the change you are seeking to make.  Right now we're just trying to figure out what you're trying to say. :)

Guys I really don't get it. Dexter, are you over tired or so? I can understand when there is a direct offence involved but this? What you did with your first post - as far as I understood it - is that you link the skill show off by some players directly to the state of the community in terms of rudeness and welcomeness. I find the replays do not at all imply anything unwelcome. Especially commented replays are ment to entertain you (not advertise you as the main purpose), to show how things are done by players that are further as you are in the way of how to mine the potential out of this game, the varieties and genius implementations from the dev team so to speak. I'm a really weak player but I love to play everytime after I watched replays and saw how the real skilled people managed their fleets, tactics and races. I want to make use of the so gathered knowledge. It does not discourage me at all nor does it feel unwelcome.

And there are replays out there that are explaing things for new players. I find that highly welcome and inviting!

It saddens me that this is the second thread of this type recently, I definitely think some of us should be rethinking how we talk to people sometimes, including me.

But at the same time, you can't expect to go on the internet without running into people you don't get along with. Same with life. The tunngle lobby and the game are both realtime environments, and you can't expect to be safe from people expressing themselves. The forums are obviously better, but are still not a sanctuary of calm.

I agree courtesy and politeness should be key among FO players. At the end of the day, we all are the same: FO players.

I also agree that a certain measure of passion is involved and this might bring some coarse language and entrenched positions on certain threads. But I noticed that people that go at each others' throats in one thread, might even join forces in another one. It seems to be somewhat compartimentalized, at least in the forums. I haven't watched any replays, so I cannot talk about commentators or battle chatter.

It's also obvious that if you are getting your tail seriously kicked, your patience will wear thin, and you will say something you might not wanted to be made public. If you are used to tell the computer screen how you feel in no uncertain terms, you might forget you have a mike attached that relays every word to the outside world.

In any case, I'd recommend to watch ourselves, but not fall into self-censorship. And even less advocate for a tighter watch on improper language or stricter enforcement of the rules.

We don't want this to become the STO forums.  :yucky:

Y'know, the fact that even anonymous incidents of this type are enough to bring out a thread on the matter is a good sign. I'd be more worried if no one cared enough to mention it.

Wait... I don't quite understand what's going on here...

Does Dexter think it is rude and unwelcome to show Replays of Good Players with according Commentary that isn't aimed at explaining anything like to Kindergartenchild or did I just read something completely different?

Agreed 100% people have no buisness being on the internet if they are going to take EVERYTHING to heart and cry about every little thing said.

There nothing wrong with wanting people to be civil and polite all the time but this is reality and people have bad days and some people are online jerks so you need to be able to laugh it off and not cry or just learn to ignore.

Still unsure of what the main topic of this discussion is however.
