New type of computer

Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

I was thinking the other day of ways to assign something more than a one or a zero to data in computers. For instance in binary the number 4 is 11 but if you could assign something else to it you would drastically improve computer performance. So my question is could you use light instead of electricity for the computer components. I am not talking about having simple fiber optics i mean your CPU would use light instead of electricity  to preform its functions. Please tell me if you dont understand my question.

you mean instead of using electricity to transmit data it would use light flashes to send data?
or like photons carrying data?

it kindof makes sense...  klick on me! -->www.fleetops.net<--

I think that one theory is instead of using 1's and 0's, they would use 0's, 1's, and 2's in a 3-dimensional plane. They would use an atom, or something, and depending on the way that it is spinning, it could count as a 0, 1, or 2. I'm not sure how it would work or anything, but that's what I heard from a friend.

exactly what i mean but i am unsure if the tech exists to store the light in a *capacitor* like you can store electricity, among other things.

I think you are hinting at quantum computing, as a qubit can be encoded as different polarization states of photons (or spin states of atomic nuclei, etc). Not existing technology yet, but it is well on its way  :D

Yay for technology!!!!  :D

if we have too much technology we might no longer be human... just machines... :assimilate:

Well... if the endless sea of drones sitting on their fat arses with their eyes glued to the Box are any clue... Resistance is futile. You will be manipulated. Your cultural and biological distinctiveness will be made bloblike. Lower your IQ and let your eyes glaze. BMI is relevant.

Hey this is my thread its suppose to be serious. o well i dont care the more times you guys bump it, the more chances it will be seen by one of the engineers on here who will be able to answer my initial question.

Just off the top of my head don't some systems already work of trinary logic which is something like 0, 1 and null?

a 0 is the same as null if i am not mistaken
