Network Address Translation (NAT)

There is something called a Network Address Translation (NAT) that prevents me from making an online game. Does anyone know of a way to correct this (in other words, get rid of it)?

A NAT allows a single device (e.g. a router) to work as an agent between the internet and a local network, meaning that your entire network is then represented by a single IP address. Even if your "network" is just one computer, it means that the IP address detected is not the same as it would be if your PC was connected directly to the internet.

It is possible to change NAT settings, probably by logging into your router (I'm assuming you have one). it may be possible to alter the IP adress which is detected by the gaming forum, or something similar. I imagine though that in the meantime you will be able to join games even if you can't make them.

I'd find your router documentation, get an ethernet cable and plug it into your PC, and have some fun tinkering around!

Yeah, I can't host for a lot of games and I suspect it's the router...
I think http://www.portforward.com/ will help, but I haven't had the chance to go through it yet.

The FAQ looks good on that site Mortographer.

this is the "battle hardened" FAQ for NAT stuff; I can't remember how often I saw that link posted on main chat channel; my 2 cents;

I still wonder you're "NAT'ing" more then 1 box?

can you not just set yourself as DMZ on your router?
