Motherboard help please?

Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

I wouldnt say that card will perform at 90% capacity, that socket type is several generations out of date, and you never specified what CPU you are using. Considering B3 recommends a quad core. If you have an older quad core you might be find, but that CPU will likely choke off that GPU much more then 10 percent. But if you got it for free obviously go for it, just make sure like everyone else said already, that your PSU can handle it and you have the right connections. Also make sure you have decent ventillation as those higher end cards make alot of heat.

that's a bit of a confusing sentence, using both "recommends" and "at least". nearly all software comes with two sets of requirements, 'minimum' and 'recommended'.

bf3's minimum is a core 2 duo @2.4ghz. its recommended is any quad core. his lga 775 socket , while old, supports core 2 duo and core 2 quad. so his only danger is if he's using a budget processor like a pentium or celeron.

Yeah I suppose that was a bit confusing after re-reading it. But he was asking about playing B3 on the higher settings so minimum isnt gonna cut it. He will need at least a quad core, and he never specified what cpu he has, which will make a world of difference on how that card will run.

i only have a dual core, admittedly a newer one than what his socket takes, i can still play bf3 on the settings he proposed. if he shuts down any running software to free up all his cpu, i think he'll be just about ok. he can always turn the resolution down slightly if he has to.

Yeah, but being a LGA775 thats gonna be rough on any dual core of that generation. I would be suprised if he gets anything above medium, and you also dont run in as high a resolution as he does, that will also make a difference. He wants to play on high at 1080, that might be too much for an older 775 core 2 duo.

Does BF3 even take advantage of quadcores? Just having a quadcore doesn't make the game run any faster if the game engine doesnt utilize the extra threads unless you running lots of background programs at the same time.

Umm, yes B3 recommends a quad core as Myles and I have already stated. They wouldnt recommend a quad core if it couldnt use it. And as far as performace goes Ive seen many instances where games run and load faster with a quad or better over a dual core, even if the game doesnt say it can use a quad core. My buddy has a dual core that we were able to unlock to a quad core and it made a big difference in load times and overall performance was better. Also I noticed when I upgraded my system to a Hex core from a dual core everything ran better, and the CPU's were both about the same speed and same core architecture so it wasnt like I totally changed and added a way faster CPU, just more cores. In my experiance with any modern game, from the last 3-4 years, they just seem to run better on quads then duals. The only time I see no real difference is when playing older titles that were early current gen or last gen.

Oh Ok. Not used to seeing games utilize it. :) Of course I play alot of "old school" (circa late 90s and early 2000s) games and never noticed a difference.

It does make a huge difference on overall performance I agree though. I can run lots of stuff simultaneously that would have completely bogged down my older dual core........of course there are differences in archicture as well so it isn't just having quad cores. I single core on my new CPU is vastly more powerful than a single core on my old CPU even though my old CPU had a higher clock speed. In fact I turned off all but one of my cores and actually tested it against my old CPU and it outdid the dual core. Can't wait for my next build in a year or so. Going SSD all the way.
