"Own choices" only in context of the rather linear main-plot.
For example: If you chose to save the council in the end of ME, it does affect the background-story in ME2, but it doesn't effectively influence the game or the plot (wow, you can either talk to a human or to a mixed-races council once).

And especially ME2 more feels like a Tactic-Shooter with mixed-in rpg-elements; reminded me of Deus Ex (but I liked ME way more).

Great game nonetheless, and I look forward to ME3 as well.

Not really of course there's a main plot but its unimportant the game will end how you want it to or rather based on your decisions but they couldnt make another game if they didn't have a main plot could they its just some decisions are more important than others, there as to be bounderys to the choices you make and wether some should or shouldnt be carried on through to the next game.

Look. You always start on Eden Prime, search several planets for Saren and you have to go through the citadel-battle in ME1. That's the main-plot.
Your decisions only determine who is gonna die and who will still be around in ME2. To me, this is still linear game-play as the plot itself won't drastically change.
Doing the small side-missions on other unimportant planets and doing the exploration-stuff (that I liked) is completely optional and irrelevant to the main-plot and the story. The next game will have different endings and if you played both games and did keep your savegames, your decisions will go in as either part of backstory or ambient and some main-plot-relevant decisions will go in as helpful or destructive consequences. At least three I could think of...

Well that's mass effect 1 and i agree but your choices become more and more important the further into the mass effect story you go, in mass effect 2 they become way more important and in mass effect 3 the series will end the way you have chosen so yeah mass effect one has decisions that meant nothing in the end but they couldn't have done it any other way think about it. A game only lets you be dynamic to an extent.

In mass effect 3 there are so many decisions you made in mass effect 2 that might effect how the battle for earth is going to play out, did you destroy the collector base or leave it for them to study, did everyone in your team die during the suicide mission or did everyone survive, if everyone survived you will most likely save earth if someone very critical to the mission dies like say tali who is a tech specialist maybe you will lose the battle because she is needed to fix something that can kill a reaper.

I do agree with you to some extent but come on.... they couldn't have made it any better really, if they made everything so important it would be a game within a game within a game, so many things that you couldn't fit it on 10 disks never mind mass effects 2s, 2 disks + the addons.

Wow, that is an EPIC trailer.  I've been wanting to get into ME but I feel like I should start at the very beginning in order to appreciate the whole story, and that could take a long time.

I ended up buying ME1 and 2 for $5 each a few days ago in a Steam sale, any advice for making a speed run of ME1?  I just want to get the best story with the least amount of game-hours.

I played mass effect 1 after i already played mass effect 2 about 7 times each ending in different ways.

You will appreciate the jump in quality if you start with the first tho but i didn't enjoy it so much because i played the 2nd first. Just play through and enjoy it, nothing too it, mass effect 2 will take most of your time tho its bloody awesome.

I also found it quite funny that Big Ben is still standing in the future and STILL standing after the reapers come.

Well i think that the plot could change with ME3 i still love it. And yeah play 1 first because now that ive played 2 it makes it hard to enjoy the first one.

And i heard that in ME3 if you make some bad choices the reapers will win the war and you will die, so really the last one will have a true chooseable ending.

and i agree that the ME series was one of the best game series ever.....
