Starcraft is amazing.
AOE 2 was great, but it didn't break much new ground.
Ground Control 2 was good, but underappreciated.
AOE 3 / DoW set the new graphics standards, they're pretty good.
Company of Heroes is amazing. (Best gameplay I have seen in a while).
Star Wars Galatic Battlegrounds was amazing, but only for it's amazing trigger system.

the AOE2 engine was used for SWGB. And already by then, it was getting way too old to base a RTS game on.
I have gone through and played AOE1 and 2 numerous of times, and right now it's been sitting on my shelf. It just is not my type of RTS.
Starcraft = good RTS.
Armada/A2 (w/ FO) = great RTS.
And DoW was much better as a board game with pewter soldiers than it was at being a PC RTS game. The RTS version of it really sucked imo.

You've got to be kidding? Starcraft was a.) a noob rts b.) way to darn fast for the defensive player c.) a rip completly from Warhammer, and I mean all the way down d.) limited and predictable
balance was ok, but starcraft is definatly showing its age these days.

No sorry i cant agree with that
Starcraft will always hold a special place to me because of how good it was
THe balance was perfect no race was better than the other
it wasnt a noob rts as it was pretty damn amazing when it was released
it wasnt too fast for a defensive player as i could defend just fine on Mp
and it wasnt a complete rip of warhammer there were alot of things from aliens actually

really? the tyranids and the zerg are essintially the same race, and the protos and eldar share some similarities, and the space marines and space marines... welll you see where that is going.

as for the gameplay I had dial up when I had Star Craft so multiplayer was not acceptable.

Never played AOE, but I love SWGB. Empire at War was good at first, but doesn't seem to have the lasting value. I like the old RTS style more.
As for Starcraft, I never got into it. I just didn't like something about it, but I did love Warcraft. I still play it, I paid $2 and got the battlenet edition from EB
. Starcraft did have an interesting Mobile Suit Gundam mod, but the mod was never really finished enough to be good, it was a little too flawed. The guys failed to recode some race-specific stuff that really messed up the playability.
As for having 20-30 ships at once: Do you only play SP? No offense intended, but that sounds WAAAY too little. I remember a 4v4 I did online one day, each person had well over 100 advanced ships, until our enemy warped in and shut off our weapons and self destructed and used superweapons out of the wazoo, and all that caused me to CTD...but anwyway, I usually have 5-6 fully used battlegroups minimum. I like to thrash everyone in one sweep whenever possible, rather than an occasional 3 man assault.
