Help Boggz Wipe His Computer

Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

Thanks, DocPhlox :).

I'll check out the Ultimate Boot CD.  And yeah I've used Abandonia for years now ^-^.  When there's a specific game you want there are oodles of places that have them :D.  The game in question is actually called Warlords II Deluxe and I had it way back in Windows 95!!

A couple of years ago I actually ordered a new CD from the guy himself and he sent me one made frmo home :).  I couldn't install it until someone luckily put up instructions in some forum on how to install it under XP.  I was sooooo happy :D.  I still have the CD so I'm sure I can install again through DOS-Box sometime.

So I went ahead and downloaded a torrent here:  WIN XP Full Service Pack 3 Integrated.

So basically I can "mount" this ISO somehow or I can burn it to a CD, yeah?  While I wait for the DL, is there a program I need to run to tell the CD that it's becoming an auto-playing Disc?

The link says the CD image is bootable already. Just use freeware like CD Burner XP or any other burning software to burn the ISO to disc. The same goes for UBCD. It might be necessary to tell your PC to boot from CD first. You can accomplish that by setting the correct boot order in your computer's BIOS.

Warlords II. Good times. I got my first PC in 1994. My first game ever was Star Trek: A Final Unity. Still one of the best games I ever played.

Ok guys so when I get to the part in Windows setup where it offers me the chance to erase partitions te computer auto-shuts off.  I cannot progress past that point.  I'd like to wipe the 12 GB partitioned on the recovery drie and start over but it keeps shutting off.  The recovery drive is NOT my external for the record.

Thiughts?  I'm on my iPhone to ask this :D.  I'll keep working on it in the meantime

Is the computer a laptop or desktop?
posted on June 18th, 2011, 4:14 am
All things seem to have reinstalled properly :).

Computer functions do seem to have increased in speed, but my internet functions are about the same speed.  That worries me a bit in the sense that I had hoped to increase my Comp-to-net speed.  My net connection is just about as fast as money can buy, so it's all on the end of the computer processor :(.

I'm reinstalling things now.  Hopefully Fleetops will go nice and smooth from now on :).

It's a "laptop".  And by "laptop", we mean it's a PDA made in 1992, which was then placed under a keyboard, hooked up to a hamster wheel, and wired to a television from the 60's.  It has a CD rom drive, but it just sits on top of the TV.  We're not even sure how it's connected... ???

Oh, and Boggz says he can get on the "net", but we thought he was just trying to catch butterflies.

Ok, then never mind. I wanted to know because I used to have a laptop that overheated when I tried to install Windows. I solved it by setting it up so that I had plenty of air flow underneath. But if everything installed fine, then I guess I didn't need to say that, lol.

I agree with tryptic, but I will change his breakdown a bit.

1st. back everything up....then double, triple, and quadruple check you got all the files backed up you wanted to save.

2nd.  get a flash drive.
:thumbsup:go to the manufacturer support website.
:woot:download your ethernet driver (note: I usually download all ethernet driver options, just in case your manual, or any software you have stating your card's model number is wrong....yes it does happen).
:lol:put all drivers in a clearly labeled folder on said flash drive.

3rd. torrent/download an XP cd....again, if you're trying to stay legit, make sure you get the right version, i.e. home, business, professional, etc.
:borg: burn disc.

4th. If you want to keep things legit, find your XP key.  Its probably on a sticker somewhere on the comp.  If it isn't, its on one of the CD envelopes that came with your computer.

5th. unplug your flash drive and backup hdd

6th. Insert XP disc and reboot.

7th. delete all partitions, then when there is only one disc left, just hit enter and choose quick format.

8th. drink a frosty beverage and wait till its finished.

9th. install ethernet driver if XP didn't find your particular driver during install.

10th. enjoy the speed of your "like new" computer

11th. install any software, i.e. antivirus, fleetops, etc.

Did you try using O&O Defrag or Ultimate Defrag yet? They offer free trials. Both programs allow you to physically sort all files on a partition in alphabetical order. This will usually speed up hard drive access and boot time quite a bit.

Hey guys so now that I've got everything set back up I seem to be missing some sort of video drivers or something.

I've reinstalled Tunngle and Fleetops, but I'm no longer able to set my own resolution at 1280x800 nor will Fleetops start up.  It says "Graphics initialization failed.  No compatible device detected."

Is there something I need to reinstall?  Some Microsoft set of graphics or some nonsense like that?

Yeah, I would expect your computer speeds to increase but not your internet.  Go ahead and get AVG or Spybot to make sure nothing new gets on your computer, but aside from that it's a hardware issue.

What speed are you supposed to be getting?  I'm starting a job at Comcast on monday and I've been studying up on their offers, the basic speed they offer is 12GB/second.

I recently reinstalled my computer and I had to install a new ethernet driver manually.  When I would go to the device manager it told me I already had an up-to-date driver but when I googled the manufacturer (Atheros) I found a newer driver for my card.  Windows squawked that it wasn't signed, but it installed fine and it should be running better since.

What video card do you have in your computer?

There should be some seemingly random numbers on the bottom of your comp, like serial number or stuff like that, pretty sure that your machine has some kind of a dedicated video card, it should have a socket 754 based motherboard (technoblah-blah...) if I remember correctly those didnt have integrated video.  Whatever... tell to Elim those stupid numbers and he will give you a link  wich driver to download.

Hahah thanks, Elim :).

I'm poking about in my Device Manager and updating all the things that it says could use an update.

I'll see how that works and get back :D
