what is the idea behind halloween? is it just walking around getting candy and scaring the sh*t out of eachother or is there a deeper meaning?

i'm not from america and we don't have halloween so i'm wondering how it came to be

Halloween is of ancient Celtic origin. The idea was to scare away roaming ghosts that rise at the end of "summer" / begin of "winter" by setting up hollow-carved turnips with lights.

The Irish immigrants brought the idea to America where they found pumpkins to be much more useful than turnips.

Halloween is derivated from All Hallow's Eve, the day/night before 1st November.

oh that was a good one, glad it wasnt me though after 4 years of karate you get defensive reflexses that are hard to control and i might have made a real ass of my self for accidentally breaking someones wrist, not that i would intentionally, i would be quite sorrowful afterwards.  . but it was still a good trick none the less :P i stopped trickertreating when i was 12, but some of my 18 year old friends still t&t and i think it is kind of childish. Also one thing that pisses me off is that all these kids go out and buy a stupid hockey mask for 2$ and they think you should give them a handful of candy when they show up at the front door, what the hell, go out and buy a real costume you candy mucher!
