Just like to share this with y'all. I spent ages on it and some features of it are inspired by Star Trek, see if you can guess which bits! Here:
The Kzinti Triumvirate
Formally declared in 2208, the declaration of war that the Gol made against the Terran Empire shocked the Alpha Quadrant for a number of reasons. The Terrans (Humans) were technologically defunct, compared to the much advanced Gol. Hundreds of ships on each side were thrust into battle and moved from system to system in a hellish 3-dimensional strategic nightmare. It was different from the problems of old earth military battles, since there simply was no floor. The enemy could attack from anywhere. With the invention of FTL (faster-than-light travel) space flight, the terrans began to colonize planets. With time, they developed faster means of travel, better ways of improving life. However, the Empire (which for all intents and purposes will be the nickname for the Terran Empire from now on in this historical extract) had never fought an interstellar war. It had made and maintained friendly relations with all the species that it had encountered. Of course, like every fledgling interstellar empire, piracy and rogue elements were rife, and local insurrections happened almost every month. Most were stopped before they got spacebourne, but sometimes mutinies forced the empire to destroy ships. This was totally different to all-out war, though.
The Gol were unstoppable. Their ships were too well-designed and their weapons were so powerful that they could melt most human armour composites. They were colossal creations. The human ships were still designed in industrial styles, blocky and thick. This made penetrating the armour with weapons easier, since it was a flat surface. The Gol ships were curvy, aesthetically amazing structures of obsidian steel that was twisted and corroded into somewhat comparably strong substances, especially when compared to the traditional steel used in the structural pillars of Empire ships. The curved surfaces helped the Gol immensely, since the coil-guns and kinetic missiles that the humans used as their staple weapons would frequently ricochet off, since most of the time they would be hitting the pitch-black obsidian armour at an odd angle. Even if the projectiles did hit without bouncing off, the curves made the armour thicker from most angles. This meant in turn that the weapons had to hit more often and be better aimed, and since the weapons launched physical projectiles, not energy-based weapons, their ordinance supplies were extremely limited.
The Gol were advanced in the weapon department too. As mentioned earlier, they used powerful weapons that could melt human alloys. They mainly utilised Arc casters, nicknamed ‘Tesla arrays’ by the Empire which fired what could be described vaguely as a controlled, directed bolt of lightning that was sustainable for several seconds. The Gol were advanced in weaponry since they evolved on a very hostile planet. Picture a Bengal Tiger, or other suitable old-earth predator. If it was on the Gal’s home-world, it would be ripped apart within minutes of being there. The Gol were actually a mild species on the surface, but as they evolved, they began to use weapons. They actually evolved similarly to the humans, learning to make fire, using tools to help with everyday life. The constant struggle for life made them weapon experts, and that mindset followed them through their existence. Their quest for human extermination is still not known whether it had a reason or not.
The war was not going well for the Empire. Their ships were being destroyed faster than their (admittedly fast) shipyards could replace them. It was a depressing time for all the citizens of the Empire, as media was for the most part not blacked out. Many people thought that human existence had somehow offended the Gol, and that they were doomed to extinction. Just destined to be a footnote in the history of the galaxy. The Empire would probably have torn itself apart, had two species not intervened. As said at the beginning of this document, the war declaration shocked the Alpha Quadrant. The shock did not end there. Genocide occurred. Genocide on a scale that had never ever been conceived by Mankind. Colony after colony fell to the Gol, and anyone who was left behind was killed. No prisoners of war, no mercy. After the war, historians likened it to the ‘Holocaust’ of World War II, in old-earth times. Two hundred million humans were killed by the Gol. There was two species that saw this, and thought to do something about it.
The Yai (plr: Yaiden) were collections of gas that had somehow evolved and gained sentience. They believed in religion still, rather than embracing industrialization like the Empire had. Their ships were airtight, and the vaccum of space was more deadly to the Yai, since they would simply be torn apart because they were gaseous lifeforms. However, being gaseous was advantageous to ground assault, since the Yai could go through most forcefields and ventilation shafts in military installations, making assault easier. They didn’t use weapons though, which meant they relied on close-up attacks for ground engagements.
However, in space their true prowess was brought into the scope. The Yai Space Force was the best trained of the navy’s involved in the war. The Yai had been involved in no less than 4 inter-stellar wars prior to the Gol declaration. They could reproduce ships faster than anyone else, too. However, due to their lack of ability to hold anything due to lacking a physical form(some Yai had enhanced brain strength which allowed their gases to collect together in such a dense formation as to have a physical form, but these were rare), their technology was somewhat lacking. Their ships were large but unwieldy, and their armour was more easily penetrated than the defunct human alloys.
The Yai played an integral part in several conclusive battles, including the ‘blob crash’ of 1st Feb 2211, which was simply a bloodbath. The ‘blob crash’ is covered later in this historical document.
The other intervening species in the war was the Helii (plr:Helliu). They were an aquatic species, that had found a strange ship crashed and sunk on the seabed in their ocean-planet. They were already skilled engineers, and reverse-engineered alot of technology from the ship. This catapulted them from the comparative Iron age to the Space age within a matter of months. The Helii were brown-green in colour, and when grown to full adulthood their tails can reach three meters long. A long tail was central to a Helii life, since it defined its status in society. A longer tail would mean a better job and more likelihood of promotion through the ranks of the Helii Interstellar Navy. The Helii did not have the capability to capably assault an enemy planet in ground combat, so they relied on weapons dropped from orbit. Planetary bombardment by the Helii was a daunting prospect, since their orbital weapons were extremely destructive.
Helii ships were massive. The Helli flagship, the Nauticus dwarfed the Gol’s heaviest battleships. One of the most important technologies in the Helii arsenal was shielding. Helii ships were all equipped with emitters all over their hull. They projected a form of ‘skin shielding’ which fitted the shape of the ship, stopping anything within 1 meter of the ship. It did this by de-materializing objects on the molecular level. However, in the waning months of the war, the Gol discovered how to penetrate. An object travelling at full engine speed (roughly 45,000 km/h, about one sixth of the speed of light) could penetrate the shield and collide with the ship, heavily damaging it, even destroying it in extreme cases if the ship connected with the right place. However, the only things that could get to that speed were spaceships. So Gol ships were sacrificed to take out the legions of ray-like ships that the Helii used, in suicidal kamikaze runs.
On the 20th of March, 2211, the last human colony was taken from the Gol occupation, and only six days later, the Gol sent emissaries to negotiate surrender. Apparently the leaders did not wish to cede any territory to the triple alliance. However, that is exactly what happened. The Gol lost 6 light years cubed to the alliance, which was split evenly amongst the three species. The Gol had massive trade restrictions placed upon them, and their interstellar navy was to be decommissioned. The Gol would never again be able to maintain a space-faring navy within 10 light-years of alliance space. The Alliance may well have gone their separate ways there and then, but they did not stray apart. Unlike what many people predicted, technologies were shared, borders were opened and trade flourished. The Empire had never been richer, or more powerful. Regular contact was made with the other two alliance members. Eventually, the three interstellar nations met in Trier, Germany on Earth to discuss a treaty which would change the quadrant forever.
The Signing of the Triumvirate
The signing occurred on the 17th of April, 2217, when the three leaders of the three powers all met in Trier. Trier grew tenfold in size and importance overnight, as spaceports bustled and buzzed with all the extra traffic that came with the summit. The signatures of the three leaders are still on display in the museum of interstellar history in Trier.
Emperor Hughes of the Terran empire was the first to sign the treasured document, writing his name and signature on the paper, then putting his thumbprint on the parchment of the human paper.
Grand Chancellor Kaiden of the Yai had the increased mental capacity mentioned earlier in the document, and signed his paper in the same way as Emperor Hughes did.
Council Leader Equinox of the Helii could not do this, since he was still an aquatic creature, however, he used a writing device made specifically for the Helii to do his signature and print. Instead of a thumbprint, a fin-print was used, since all the contours of a frontal fin on a Helliu were, and are still unique.
The parchment stated that:
1. All members of the triumvirate agree to abide by the laws set in place at the signing.
2. The Triumvirate is a single nation, all technology is shared, and research to better help enjoyment, quality of life and nation advancement is to be conducted in equal amounts.
3. The council must have a 2-to-1 majority vote within the three racial councils, for any given major decision to be implemented.
4. War may never be declared, unless open hostility is the only option to resolve a situation, or war is the only way to preserve the integrity of the Triumvirate.
5. The Triumvirate is primarily a peaceful, scientific race. Currency makes individuals unequal, and causes ructions. To make all living beings within the Triumvirate equal, capital is abolished, in favour of a more equal, peaceful society of people who help the cause, not themselves.
The Kzinti Triumvirate is a name derived from two sources. ‘Kzinti’ is an ancient Yai word for ‘prosperity’, and ‘Triumvirate’ is from Old-earth Roman times, which means ‘Three leaders’. Essentially, the whole name is translated as Prosperous leaders, or Prosperous nation.
Triumvirate Technology and Statistics
The Triumvirate, having been in existence for 34 years now, has reached a new level of technology and ability. Its combined research has brought about powerful new skills which have unlocked the far corners of space. A notable few include:
The Star-borer Inter-system FTL drive
The Star-borer is the newest system for travelling between star systems. It is comprised of small emitters spread at symmetrical locations throughout the ship which act as ‘rails’ to keep the ship on target to its destination. A large burst of negatively-charged tachyons is released, and the ship is pushed into a form of compressed space, given the nickname ‘Node space’. Node space is a highly compressed form of space that allows a ship to travel at ‘normal’ speed but go much further than it should. A burst of positively-charged particles can push the ship back up into regular space. However, the drawback with this system (along with most other FTL systems used by the Triumvirate) is that it only works near large gravity wells, like stars. The gravity wells have an effect on space-time, fracturing the entrances into node space. This means that in deep space, where there are no gravity wells, the drive is useless. However, the system is really fast, and ships in node space are not stoppable or able to be intercepted, since node space is so hard to track, and another ship’s node space ‘stream’ is not enterable as far as our understanding goes.
The Plasmatic Combustion Energy Core
The newest form of energy production involves a totally air-tight core of plasma, which reacts violently to hydrogen. A constant stream of hydrogen particles is fed into the core, only 4 or 5 a minute, but as each one hits the plasma, it is split. This is like nuclear fission, except it is done with the most base element in the universe. Since hydrogen is abundant, especially around Gas Giants, in theory the PCEC is a limitless source of energy.
The Ionic Thruster
The Ion thruster is a basic concept. Fuel goes in the front, matter goes out the back at high speed which propels a ship forwards. This tradition of engines has been around since the 20th century, when jet engines were first invented. However, due to the high-speed of the ions being pushed backwards, ships can reach speeds up to almost 120,000 km/h, which is over a third of the speed of light.
Triumvirate Statistics
The Triumvirate is currently in possession of 74 star systems, with colonies in each one. A total of 228 colonies are recorded, in addition to the three home-worlds. The following statistics are rounded to the nearest million.
Terran Population:
49.56 Billion, Home-world: Earth, Population 8.3 Billion.
Yai Population:
36.74 Billion, Home-world: Sheridan IV, Population 89 Million.
Helii Population:
70.4 Billion, Home-world: Ingrid Prime, Population 12.4 Billion.
Total Statistics
Total population: 156.7 Billion. Total star-ships: 1047. Current Total Warships: 230. Current Scientific Ships: 645. Current Exploration Vessels: 172.
Notable Events
The signing of the treaty was covered earlier in the document.
The infamous ‘blob crash’ was the single most destructive battle in known history. The Alliance/Gol war had come to a head at the Ceti Sagittarius system, a vital resource system for the Gol.
The Alliance had gathered most of its 320 warships at the outermost planet, and was waiting for the Gol to come to them, in a massive battle. The Gol had a tight defence grid around CS-3, a super mineral planet composed of many different rare elements. After 16 days of small skirmishes and waiting, the Alliance charged. One minute, the Gol fleet was dark. The next, it was alight with the flashes of the exiting ships from node-space. Every alliance ship had done an in-system jump to the planet, catch the Gol unawares. Many of the defence emplacements were still powering up when this happened, and a stray asteroid from the nearby asteroid belt had messed up every single ship’s sensors. The battle was fought on visual only, and the Alliance shots were too well-aimed, too precise and too co-ordinated for the Gol to counter. Of course, many Alliance ships were destroyed or disabled in the attack, but the Gol suffered badly. Their main battle fleet was the defenders of the planet, and as many of their ships were offline, they were slaughtered. The area around CS-3 was orbited by obsidian debris and scorched metal plates that had been melted to molten slag. The area was also disgustingly littered with bodies, since the weapons fire typically decompressed ships before disabling and destroying them, and many ships had been affected in this way. The Helii flagship, the HISN Nauticus was particularly devastating in the battle, destroying 23 Gol Cruisers and 12 Destroyers before being lost, sadly with all hands. Its crew was all commemorated with statues and memorials in both Trier and the home-world of the Helii. The Alliance scored terrific ship-to-ship ratios, however. With a ratio of 3 Gol ships destroyed to every single one Alliance ship, the Gol fleet was in tatters, and after an hour of fierce fighting, the remainders of the Gol fleet retreated.
162 Alliance ships were lost that day, in exchange for 486 Gol ships. This event was most likely the main catalyst for the Gol surrender.
This is actually my first piece of Descriptive writing for my GCSE Coursework. I know the paragraphs have been screwed by copy/paste from word, but hopefully the indents still show. Enjoy.
