Concerning Waldo

If you noticed the thread about the Galaxy/Sovereign/Akira-special-ability issue, you might also wonder who "waldo" is. And before this questions kicks the above mentioned thread off-topic I'm continuing asking here:

Who is waldo?
I'm from Europe, more precisely from Germany, but I don't know him/her/whatever.
The only association I have is Wolly (Candidate for the Lord mayor in a bigger city.), but I can't imagine that he is meant...

I've never seen the show and I don't even know it nor did I ever hear about it.
At least I understand the joke now...

looks like i have to shed some light into this ->places/games i ran into waldo/wally/walter:


The first time i ran into him was in Leisure Suit Larry 7 Larry Laffer(wiki)

in this game there was a persiflage about him (his name was d1ld0 and he was a red and white striped sausage;

Then during my Civilian service time in Pre-school/Kindergarten i saw a book from him-> was quite difficult to spot him in that large crowd.
