1] I've went through the members list to add some buddies, but I've noticed that there are undreds of users that either never logged on or have only been active for one day. Should those users get removed allowing more room for newer users and ones that come more frequently?

2] Why is the max attachment size 2MB? Could it be increased to 3MB? I hav had so many things I wanted to post that were just above the limit...

3] Should audio and video files have a different limit in size since they take up much more memory? I got a 2 minute long media file at it takes up nearly 19MB!

4] What things have you done to become a dev (Proj. Admin)? Is there a series of tests and stuff? Or did you all become devs just because you founded the site?

5] Are there going to new smilies and emoticons? If so would any of my suggestions be there (attached)?

6] Will there be any new psoting features after the next upgrade? Would there be an html code option? Because I know html code a little better than the site code, and I wouldn't have to keep converting things from one code to another.

I'd appreciate your answers...

I think I can partially answer at least 1 and 4
Well, as far as I know, Optec, Doca Cola, and Detektor all play(ed) an RPG together and that was the inspiration for the mod... and thus began Fleet Operations. Don't know about Remoter.... and Zeich came on later (guessing here) cuz of his uber skills at making really pretty models (check out his site sometime: or look at the cardie models he made in the past). Jan... don't know the back story either as I wasn't even part of the site .

There are indeed a ton of users that never go to the site again: but why remove them if they might come back. Plus, I don't think they take up really much space at all, and there is plenty of room  :whistling:

If I may answer some questions, because some of them are quite obvious to most forums/sites. Of course I an not dev and they might have different reasons.

1) I don't think that removing users is very usual, only when user haven't logged in for a years, and I don't know many sites that does that. And as Dominius said, they really don't take up much room.

2,3) I don't think that the Fleet Ops team has infinite disk space in their disposal. It is also possible that there is a traffic limit and they don't want too much extra traffic to this site. (2 mins? Couldn't you compress it a little bit more? You might get it under 2 Mb, depending on what type of media is it, of course)

5) The features on this forum is most likely much depended on the forum engine (and it makes some limits (well, time mostly) for adding new features).

There could be some serious side effects if html would be enabled in posting (and if it is (very)limited html, there wouldn't be new possibilities, and the forum coding is a little simpler). To limit the possibilities to misuse the forums, the forum has its own coding instead of html.

User profile takes up 120 MB?(!?) What does those sites store about their users? Are those sites gathering some intelligence about their users or what?

I don't believe that regular sites use so much capacity per user, and after all, most of registered users are seen only once and never again. And I if there would be needed 120 MB per user, the Fleet Ops site would require 313.8 GB of disk space JUST for user profile data (2615 forum members at the time of writing). Most likely, if the user don't post much attachments, the profile wouldn't take up much space, perhaps some megabytes, or more or less, depends on posting activity, but probably still under 10MBs, if the attachments aren't counted (I think that only small part of forum users posts the most of the attachments (by size)).

What I need like real bad is the ability to attach things to a pm! :( There are things I want to send to a friend but I can't. Some I don't want to put on forum. So I'm stuck!

I dont mean to sound harsch gamer but you got to learn to work with what you got. You cant expect things to be changed just because it would faciatate you better with the restrictions curently Imposed upon you by your parental guardians. Why not ask ur parents to make u a sub account for an email?....That way if ur parents are concerned about certain things(which we wont mention here) they can always check up on it.

EDIT: Dom beat me by a lil bit lol.

  • Why delete somebody? We try to avoid deletion (of posts, messages, users etc) as far as possible, cause its the idea of a forum that everybody has something to contribute. If we would do such strange things like deletion of topics (like multiple topics about the same question with a large enough time space between them.. "when is it done?" comes to my mind here) or users that prefere to read, that wouldn't benefit the community much, and i always felt it a bit strange that such behaivor is common use in many forums. We do only delete stuff if its either agressive, inapropriate or violates the forum rules.
  • The attachment limit is there due to technical reasons. Ever wondered were all your attachments go? Well, onto our server, so we have to provide the space to host that stuff. As space costs something, the reason is quite obviouse. There are many platforms for hosting Fleet-Operations related media files, the most popular one should be youtube.
  • I think point 2 already answered that
  • Ehm.. uhm.. Yea, i guess we are "just" dev members because we are "just" dev members. That's the trick. A dev member is a member who is involved into Fleet Operations development. Like Zeich or Me. DOCa is the site admin because - well you guessed it - he administrates the forums. Yep, it's that easy.
  • I think the current selection of emoticons serves it job well, but if we come across some nice ones or just feel lazy enough to make a few new, we will add them
  • Embedding HTML in forums may cause security issues, no change will be done in this sector. If you want to set up a Home Page, feel free to, there are tons of free webspaces out there.

gamer's smiley list wrote: - A Klingon (holding a Batleth and having those ridges and a tan)

I like those two, could be useful sometimes (in the same way as  :borg: and  :cloak: are)
