Perhaps because barking orders to your mate is more effective if he is in your arm's reach ?

If they're in the same room, couldn't you get a glance at their base and constructions without moving yours off-screen?

true, but on ts u could just ask for key info. i find im rarely conversing with my ally all the time, so there is capacity for more sharing of info.

Or they drink during play   One question on etiquette: Could it be considered impolite if a two player team meet in one room and play against another team via the internet? Would it be exploitable?

I wouldn't consider that impolite. Bring on the teammanship

we are all so spread out that finding fo players near to other players is hard.

There are at least two in the Ruhrgebiet in Germany! And I'm about to recruit a third one Btw: I'd still like to donate, without using Paypal. FO is awesome ... there is also a gourp in a student-social network

In constantly trying to recruit my colleagues and get them addicted.  Unfortunately those who do play strategy games tend to like Starcraft
