Three because it leaves a lot of room to micromanage and learn. Any more and you can't control many special abilities with any reasonable accuracy (take the Griffin's ability--it lasts 2 seconds on GS4). Any less than three, and things early game get pretty boring.
EDIT: this is just in my own opinion of course. I do know of another player who enjoys gamespeed 2 and sometimes three. I "recently" made the shift down to GS3 because it is much more fun... but GS2 makes me actually do worse because there is just too much time between events for my tastes

I guess thats the part that i like... the time to setup attacks and actual strategy when playing at the slower speeds. I have mananged to play speed 2... but speed 3 and above are just to fast for me... plus i swear the destroyers get killed so fast at speed 3. they just dont last on the battlefield once you are in the mid to late game.

Dang it, No wonder the Comp is so stinkin fast. I had the speed set to 4.
Now I just feel stupid, thanks a lot guys.

No need to feel stupid... alot of people dont realize the game speed issue. I mean... the faster game speeds ( to me anything above 2) make the destroyers feel like fighters and move like them. Not to mention that all the classes seem like a step or 2 below where they should be. Worse than that... Star bases can be taken out in under a minute of game time... COME ON! Plus... i really enjoy seeing ships in the game "gun" each other down.

yah, it sure seems like that. Now if only we could get the scripted 3d attack paths working, then we could have hit and run, broadsides, circleing, and all sorts of other things like that.

I know what you are thinking... like in star fleet command 2... its sort of implemented here to be honest... You do get weapon arcs on some ships... shame there is no alpha strike.... now that would be cool.

Come to think of it... it would be to much micromanaging... it is fleet operations not ship operations...

Indeed
Hence gamespeed 3 for me
. You still get a lot of micromanagement in, and I get about 2-3 minutes of dealing with only 3 ships on occasion, but you will get fleets eventually.

Hence gamespeed 3 for me

TO be honest i wish there was some sort of total ship cap... think as in warcraft 3 where you could only have so many units... whatever mix you wanted... but just so many units using so many points... you could gain above the limits units buying them at the merc camp or some other ways but i hate when im trying to manage 100 ships in the game... i really enjoy small fleet engagements... say 32 ships at most in about 3 or 4 groups... then again... that is why i like speed 1... easy to manage that many and again... BE ABLE TO RETREAT SHIPS TO AVOID LOSSES.

Jem'Hadar Attack ship, ram that other vessel for the Founders! Die for them!....errr I mean welcome to the forums, Royjaxfl!
It's hard to avoid losses when I'm deliberately smashing my bug against your starship for the shear pleasure of it, I guess that's why I play Dominion so often.
What you describe sounds like fun, I might have to try it sometime. Might be fun with ships that have a long range like sabers and rhienns, where you can really take advantage of their range. It would be hard for me though. I had a hard time adjusting from game speed 4 down to 3, I actually like the fighter feel that destroyers have at that speed.
You'll have to play online with us sometime, although I can imagine that going from speed 1 to 3 would be quite the shock!

Good lord... I never thought about the whole ram your ship into the enemy... Then again that is only policy of the jemhadar and unless a jemjadar ram can guarantee taking out a cruiser at least (even better if it can take out a galaxy class like we saw in the DS9 TV show) I think its a waste of resources to have a ship disable the engines of another at the sacrifice of itself. The biggest problem I see with that is that in my game speed I can protect it and then retreat it and repair and while you would be down a ship I still have a brand new r/r ship at my disposal. Not to mention I think in the latest version the power of the ram is toned down quite a bit.

Like I had posted before I love when it’s a war of attrition at the early game (I always build the fastest ship I can in the early game so that I always have the option to retreat them and outrun the enemy). Then in the midgame I use my destroyers to cover the retreat of injured cruisers and battleships. It’s easy to do all this super micro managing at speed 1... I am going to have a hella of a shock when I have to play at speed 3 online with someone... I’m thinking I’m going to get my ass handed for a while while I get used to things happening so fast.

Ill give you the best example of playing at speed one. I normally play at speed one with everyone having all the technology -option free tech from the beginning of the game- right off the bat. What this gives me is the resources I build go strictly toward ship building. I also raise the universal cost to 1.5 and the build speed to 1. Again... this makes the game a pure war zone. You only build offensive structures and ships. I love to play the Borg and right off the bat I get the advantage of the holding beam. This means you don’t come anywhere near my buildings unless you just want to turn over your ships. My hardest enemy is always the federation. With the warp in if they get an early artillery ship then I have to immediately get my lone scout out to fight it off and try not to loose it ( thanks God it can survive a few torpedoes while the rest miss!). I got say it’s going to be ruff seeing a ship loss in 2-3 real seconds at speed 3. I mean I can have a destroyer survive an initial engagement with a BB and run because when I hear the warning I can "spacebar" to it and select the ship in time to run from the second volley that might do it in. That’s the beauty of the slower speed to me. You can actually take care of ships instead of managing casualties for fleets.

This is my original post... sorry... only my second post at the time and i did not know you could combine a poll with a post.
Hey guys n gals...
Here is a good one that I don’t seem to find anywhere so I want to get an opinion on it. GAME SPEED. I was just reading the hitchhikers guide to fleet ops ( GREAT READING BY THE WAY! ) and it stated that most players play speed 3 or 4 while some online matches happen at speed 2. I just need to know... am I the only person who enjoys playing at speed 1 with costs at 1.5 and build speed all the way down? I enjoy having a few ships which I nurture and care for from "birth" and I hope to have towards the end. Being a real life Soldier I hate the idea of cannon fodder (it is actually offensive to anyone who ever served!) And this is why maybe like the idea of fewer units on the map who are cared for. Now truth be told it makes for a very slow start in the game - the "setup and initial build" can take 20 min - but when you send that first destroyer pair out (unless you are the federation... then warp in makes you an early hunter) you will return them when their shields are low instead of risk loosing them and waiting another 5-10 min for another pair. Now I have never played humans at this speed but the computer loves to send one or 2 constructors out and secure resources before building up. Now this gives me the advantage initially as I go scout with SCOUTS instead of slow construction ships But then when 1 or 2 AI players get cemented in (I normally play with at least 6 total players on the biggest maps I can find) then the ship cranking starts on those who I could not attack and capture or destroy.
So what is the point of this rant... at speed 1 it’s relatively easy to save ships and get them repaired and back on the front line! Unless I have a destroyer encounter a combat cube or a tavara (whose beam weapons shred them before I can hit the r key) I have very little losses compared to my AI opponents. I do loose crew to the Borg and definitely loose crew to the klingon boarding ships... But crews... not ships. Those return back to the front line after being recrewed and repaired. Not only that... the "FEEL" of the game feels more like it should. These are slow lumbering huge warships... not agile fighters. Save for the defiant and the destroyers the rest of the ships should accelerate SLOWLY to their "top speed" and have to slow down to turn. It should be easy for a destroyer to outmaneuver and outrun cruisers battle ships and dreadnaughts. I mean the Battleships should be bristling with firepower but be unable to even have a chance to chase down a cruiser or a destroyer.
I have tried to play at speed 3… played speed 4 once… stopped… I heard of attacks and stuff was blown up before I could get there with my mouse. I’m posting a poll with this too to get a feel of the community on this. Ill welcome your thoughts… the more details the better.

Personaly i like speed 2 more than 3. Snice most online players hardly exept speed 2 i somehow adapted to speed 3, but if i see speed 4 i just regretfully have to leave. There is no point in fighting a war one can not win.
As for speed 1 honestly newer tried id ( seemed to slow).
I manage to save mi ships from the AI attacks on speed 2 but on speed 3 the Sabers, B'rels and other smaller ships are hard to save in time ( at least for me ), specialy in multiplayer where the opponent always manages to kill of to many of them.
B'rels just fall like flies thanx to the short range and olny forward fiering arc ( yes i know i need more practice whit them ), not to mention there weak shields. Also the avatar makes a huge difference for all non borg players. Choosing a later game avatar is hard in a 1 vs 1 mach.
Whit the Federation and Romulan i manage to play not to badly, borg is ok as well, but whit dominion and klingon its a totaly different story.
Lately i have been fighting as klingon ( Martok whos picture is flipped ), but especialy against the long range opponents ( federation and romulan ) i fail misserably. Some players can be lured in traps, that helps, and harassment, but with only 4-5 B'rels there is hardly any time to destroy even 1 mining ship. So i resort to hit-run tacticks 'till i have more funds available for better ships.
BOP spam sounds good but whitout the ability to defend mi expanshion its a lost game. Tested it in a few games, and as soon as i loose mi expanshion even if i was the first to attack and distract the opponent, if they warp in at mi minig i run low on funds, hence no ships, he outproduces me, and game over. Same goes for Romulan specialy Helev as the Rihen disruptor refits whit the special kill of my ships. Cant find a good counter whit klingon ( Martok ) agianst Feds and Romulans.
Occasionaly i do better on speed 2 as it alows a better micromanagement. Still concentrating on hit and runs, and building ships does seem a lot, at least for me.

Good comments Dex
I've done some thinking about possible counters--hopefully we'll be able to play more today as it would be nice to see if these strategies might help
