Alright guys, first of all it has been a long time since I have been here on the forums! Secondly me and my house mate have just recently started playing FO together a lot. Hes completely new to the game and I'm not a noob but not brilliant either.
When we are up against 2v2 ai merciless we get our arses handed to us. If we go up against 2v2 (1 hard 1 merciless" we walk all over them both.
We seem to really struggle against 2 merciless as their economies despite the same amount of moons, (they have less freighters and oddly enough random mining stations). So my first question is what is the deal with the Ai economy? I'm assuming they have some sort of boost?
Secondly how many freighter per moon? we build 3.
Thirdly what should we aim to spam out first sabers or monsoon / intrepids ( I know M/I is dependant on opponent What I mean is level 0 or level 1 ships.)?

welcome back
econ:
the ai gets supply for free. every second the ai gets given loads of supply, it will never be out of supply. this means when a race is balanced by needing lots of supply (dominion/klink) the ai gets ships much cheaper, and is harder.
the harder the ai difficulty, the cheaper it gets stuff. this applies to all resources.
the hardest ai pays 10% of what you would pay for something. it also gets -40% build time.
try adjusting the cost/time sliders to change how much the ai can spam.
teching up:
it's never a good idea to spam lower tier ships for too long, as higher tech levels give you more cost efficiency. so always think about trying to tech up.
as for sabres or chassis 1 (mon/int), the question is: can you keep your sabres alive? if they can make it out of battle and repair reliably, then you're ok to use them for a short while. if they never survive for you, then start with monsoons/intrepids. get the special as well, as it lets you finish off ships. either way, sabres should only be made for about 5-10 ships before you should get chassis 1.

Awesome, thanks for the info. What about moons? Are we right on 3 per moon? 1 mining base each? I found if we share mining bases with 2 moons and 3 on each they clog up?

forgot to answer that. yes for non borg races 3 freighters to a moon will get max resources available per second. feel free to start with only 2 miners if you want a little extra money for a combat ship. don't forget to build the third when you can.
for borg it is 2 miners per moon.
for mining stations, the classic setup is 1 mining station next to each moon, with 3 miners at work. if the two moons are close enough together, 1 non borg mining station can cover 2 moons with ether no loss of production, or a tiny loss. put the station in the middle. if the moons aren't close then don't do this.
traditional dominion supply mining is to take 1 miner off a moon and convert it to supply mining. an alternate setup is to dedicate a tri moon with 3 or 4 supply stations and 6-8 supply miners working (this is where you should put perimeters). you can bankroll multiple players with such masses of supply. they'll need to give you tri occasionally.
