Well guys, it's been awhile!  Sorry about that.  New babies take up a lot of time, not to mention the older ones! :-p  While I haven't had much time to participate on the forums, let alone play games, I've decided that FO is pretty much the only good Star Trek game I've ever played besides EGA Trek and Star Trek: A Final Unity (bad story but fun gameplay).

I think that EGA Trek needs to be remade, but that project would be a fairly simple one man job.  The real challenge would be to remake "A Final Unity."  What I want to do is remake the style of gameplay where stories, problems, battles, etc. could be changed.  I am curious if anyone knows of a fairly current game engine that would be suitable for this.  If anyone has any input, I'd very much welcome it.

Thanks in advance!  I really miss you guys! Does the Galaxy class have saucer-separation yet!?

I'm not sure, but afaik cry 3(possibly the best you can get) is free for non-commercial projects. Also the UDK(Unreal Engine) is free for non-commercial use.

Crytek | MyCryENGINE
UDK - Unreal Development Kit - Epic Games

Both are state of the art engines, if you want a more simpistic 2d/3d engine:

The trouble with making a game like A Final Unity, is that you'd need an engine capable of both space-side and planet-side aspects, like Star Trek Online has, but obviously, with more offline capability.

And also, with the planet-side bits, the maps would have to be a lot more open than they were in AFU. In AFU there were only a few paths, and as it was all based on a 2D background image, they were able to make the scene look huge whilst keeping you in a relatively small area. In a full 3D engine, the map would need to BE huge.

It is a shame that there have been no games recently that have the same kind of feel as AFU had, the plot and immersity that made it feel like a real episode of Trek. STO is the closest we've got.
