Is it possible to change the number of ships that arrive when called? I look through several relevant files but didn't see any option that looked obvious.

yh its quite easy to increase the amount of ships that arrive open fed_warpinA and find the ship list now u'll need to make a new list with
replacement3class0 = "fed_excelsiorW"
replacement3class0randomweight = 4
replacement3class0position = 0,0,-200
replacement3class1 = "fed_steamrunnerW"
replacement3class1randomweight = 2
replacement3class1position = 0,0,-200
replacement3class2 = "fed_nebulaW"
replacement3class2position = 0,0,-200
replacement3class3 = "fed_galaxyW"
replacement3class3position = 0,0,-200
replacement3class4 = "fed_ambassadorW"
replacement3class4position = 0,0,-200

this will add a 4th ship to arrive

Thanks! My plan is to add several buttons to SFC, one for just 1 ship, 1 for 5-6, one for maybe a dozen, and finally another for an entire fleet of ships (assuming the game could even handle 100 ships warping in at the same time) but unfortunetly it doesn't seem to be as easy as Armada II was. I thought I modified the right part of each version of SFC but no new buttons. :( Wouldn't mind some more help. :)

Hmm,  well techtree...Buttons, you need to make sure that the weapons don't have the same button priority, or slot number, are in the techreee, actually have buttons,  and belong to an existing hardpoint.

Could you post the section of code you modified in SFC?

I don't have anything modified right now, I ended up screwing it up, no ships would ever arrive. I had to uninstall the whole thing including user settings to get it to work again. :/
