Ok, I have 2 files. the 1st is a jpeg with black background and white sections for the parts I want as an alpha channel. The 2nd is a TGA of the main texture file, with a partial finished alpha channel.

How do I merge the 1st file with the alpha of the 2nd? Im using paint shop pro.

Well, I could tell you how to do it with gimp :sweatdrop: but the easiest way would be to simply cut out the black parts on one of them, and then copy the whole layer and paste it on top of the other.  I don't know if that works as easily in PS

Problem I get is when I merge the 2 files onto a black jpeg with just the white lights and the reg lights it looks fine, but then when I try to save them as an alpha on the base texture the reg lighta go a solid colour instead of the faded light I started with :(

how do I set mspaint to gray scale?

At Win XP: Images -> Attributes -> Colors -> Black and white
At Win 7 : upper left (the blue menu button) -> Properties

But I think, Paint is not very useful for this.

Go to file->properties and there should be an option for black and white rather than color.  That is how it is in in Win 7 anyway.  I don't remember how to do it in old mspaint
