I need help installing a mod that adds another race on, and it seems that no matter what I do it doesn't work right. I put it inside the actual program, both in it's own folder, and in the addon folder. Neither one works. Can somebody help? And please put step by step instructions in lay mans language please. Thanks.

A good mod will provide a readme with instructions and a really good one (such as FO) will provide an installer

If not then you will need to figure it out by getting to know a little about the structure of the game.  Most mods require that the files go into the relevant folders, such as .tga files going into texturesRGB, .odf files going into the relevant odf folder (this is a little different between stock A2 and FO), etc.

On top of this, to add a new race then you are going to have to replace races.odf or edit it.

Even a single ship mod can require you get you hands dirty editing text files unless they provide a drop in replacement that will mess with any other mods you have installed.

A good mod... :P

What you need to do is look in the downloaded folders.  in my case, my new mods are exe based, so you run the exe, and tell it to install in the fleet ops directory, that is, wherever Fleetops is installed You find and select the fleetops folder when it asks where to install, and click next.

If it is just a non-installer mod, then you can copy all the files and put them in your folders the same way.  First, open My Computer, and click on your C drive.  Then open the program files folder, and then the activision.  you should then see a folder named Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations.*  that is your main directory.  open it, and then open the Data folder in that.  Usually, you can just paste a mods folders in here and it will work, but sometimes you will have to just copy the files in the downloaded folders and paste them in the identical folders in your main directory/data folder.

*  If you have installed my mod Fralo, and didn't select a directory, the default install is the desktop, so look on your desktop for a folder called Data.  If it is there, copy or cut the entire folder and paste it in your main directory. C:/Program Files/Activision/Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations.  If you have made a copy of FO to put mods in, paste it in there instead.

Well I installed the mod by cutting and pasting all of the files out of the folder and putting them in the list of files. I think I figured it out myself, but thanks for the help.
