Reduced Damage: Have certain weapons do reduced damage to the ship in question. Which requires changing the damage in every effected weapon odf.
Increased Defensive Value: Increase the Hull strength.

Hmm, I actually like the reduced damage option as being more realistic, (perhaps the armor is more effective at preventing torpedo explosions then other things for instance) but Hull strength modulation makes a lot of sense too

Probably reducing damage taken to the vessel in general. But, which vessels would be capable of deploying it? The only documented vessels (That I have seen) were Janeway's shuttle and Voyager upgraded. However the Defiant and other ships that came after her had a pitiful version of ablative armor that stayed on the hull and dissipated heat, so it was perfect at deflecting phaser blasts and the like. Not so good at stopping torpedoes, but I suppose that other vessels were equipped with the future version of the armor as a last resort. (As were transphasic torps but just against the Borg and only as a final attack before the ship could probably be destroyed) However, a mission that just involved Voyager fully upgraded with armor, Borg and modified tech against the Borg. It could be seriously hard, but it would be a cool mission anyway.
The armor would be a cool addition.

Well, it is obvious that the Ablative Armor would increase defensive value, it is a passive ability in itself.

Use Both. Reduced Weapon damage and higher defense value.

I would say increased hull health, because I dont think you can make certain weapons do less damage to the hull only. I don't know if this is about ablative armor, but ablative armor is designed to vaporize when hit with weapons, dissapating the energy, and that dosen't sound like it would effect every weapon the same.
Unless this is for an unshielded ship, I would just ( actualy, I would do none of this
) make the hull stronger

Well, it is for the Risner Sovereign. I decided to give it armor to explain why it has grey patches on the hull that aren't on the Mayson one.

The model is different for Risner's? I've never noticed that before... I'll have to check that out

The FO one isn't different, but I replaced it with it with 3 seperate versions of the P81 Sovereign (nothing wrong with the FO one, it's just personal preferance).
Mayson has the standard white ship, Risner has grey patches over the hull (done like armor) and a Terran one that is all dark (much more 'Military' colored that the regular one).
