Pathng is found in the RTS_CFG file. For planets ther is a second aspect of a Atmosphere texture. Maybe you could alter that to suit for the haze. Them you layer a dust nebula with low level of constant damage. for the friction and the event horison plays sudden death.

For the black hole (and to a MUCH lesser extent the neutron star) I was thinking having some sorta field effect (IE: similar to what the old remore ECM animation used) with eacy layer of the ring changing color (and showing that you're in an area with increased gravity, thus meaning a slower ship is that much closer to being stuck)

On of the nebula functions is to reduce speed but its a flat rate fir the whole nebula.

that easy then
design almost fully transparent nebulas for each set of rings arround the black hole
each slows the ship down more and more.
