BADLANDS ENCOUNTER:
-- [tt]Updated as of 3/30/10[/tt] (Forgot to add a moon for Balance
)
Players: 6
Arrangement: 3 vs. 3 OR 2 vs. 3 OR 2 vs. 2 (though not recommended)
Dimensions: 20,000 x 20,000 (Large)
Moons: Full exp per player (not safe). Plenty of moons to fight over.
Nebulae: Many. Most are Nucleon and Tetryon Nebs are the others unbalance gameplay for Borg too much. Some pockets of Green exist, usually surrounded by harmful nebs. Mutara's are rare but exist.
Wormholes: Wormhole connects the Asteroid Belt to the Heart of the Badlands perimeter.
BRIEFING:
"[tt]On the northern side of the Badlands lies a nearby star system that draws it's life-giving energy from a collapsing 'White Dwarf' star that is uniquely located nearby. As the star has begun dieing, it has thrown resources out into the surrounding sector that we must utilize before opposing factions can do so themselves! We will provide you with our preliminary charts of the area:[/tt]

[/align]
[tt]This sector encapsulates part of the perimeter of the area known as 'The Badlands' on the Federation / Cardassian Frontier. Luckily for us, the Badlands themselves are officially part of neither entity and the fruits are ripe for the picking! Your job is to secure the star system and investigate into the calmer part of The Badlands, acquiring any further moons you may find. The deeper you go into the Badlands, the more strange things you may encounter and find, but for the purpose of this mission you need only venture into the immediate outskirts. Travel no farther than the wormhole exit for the purposes of this undertaking.
Oh - and I need not warn you that we have reports of competition from none other than our common enemies. It would be a safe assumption to make that they want this star system for themselves ...
You have your orders!"[/tt]
So Giddyup!
HISTORY and PURPOSE:
I have always wanted to make a map utilizing The Badlands! Due to pathing issues it can be VERY difficult to do correctly, though. Here I think I've struck a nice balance between some micromanagement and sheer frustration. A good 1/3 of the map includes some outskirts of The Badlands. This area is not in the heart of the tempest and is navigable with careful attention. LARGE fleets of ships will not handle this well at all, but clicking over a longer distance should not cause the pathing AI to go crazy and lose it's mind. Thus you are still better off sticking to small exploration or raiding groups into the badlands area, but when you need some muscle in there you are not incapable of sending larger fleets inside.
The rest of the map consists of an asteroid belt that surrounded the collapsed star in the top left-hand side. Don't be fooled: though much of the asteroid belt looks impassable, you will find that large and open paths exist through them. Only the largest asteroids in each belt are impassable to vessels.
To make direct and un-interrupted raids on the opponent's side I suggest using the space-causeway in between the badlands and the belt. No resources nor nebulae exist there to impede a fleet's movement. (I am hoping that in the future the devs will create an invisible map doodad that can be placed and increase the speed of vessels inside of it
.
Best of luck!
