Hey dev team, just wanted to say everything thus far looks great! I'm really excited to see the new update go into effect! Now I'm sure many people have already asked but because I have not quite tacked down browsing the forums I cannot seem to find the answer. When is it projected that this next big update will be released? I'm really stoked about some of the changes that are being and can't wait to see them in action!

The dev team have given no release date. The reason for that is to avoid potential let down if a date is missed. flee tops and mods in general are produced with the free time of the development team and because of this factor anything could happen where weeks of busy day to day things might prevent any or all of them from working on the mod.
Rest assured though, flee tops has been an ongoing development since 2003 and will continue to produce releases in good time, when the next version is tested and balanced with all the new feature the devs wish to include.

I've actually been playing since it first came out, but I was a younger fella and didnt know there was a website. Abd a few years ago I had a profile on the old version of the website but lost the info. Anyway I was just looking for a ball park estimate, though I totally understand the reasons for holding back.

Doca normally loves these ones, but ...
Yup, we can't give any release dates - we'll put out a news post each time there is the opportunity, until the release of next version

If you don't mind me asking, why don't you guys do open beta's for the new content? I mean I could understand if this was a commercial game, but for a mod? Why not let users test and give opinions on the new features before official release? Give us something to do why we wait...

I have always wondered that... love the mod though. Great work guys.

Well, FO is basically a beta as-is. Aside from that, 3.2.3 is 244MB and an open beta in the way you are describing would probably require nightly or weekly uploads. It wouldn't be all that great of an idea to make people download a quarter gig periodically just to see stuff a bit in advance. And simply patching the beta to avoid massive downloads might not be very feasible when doing something like a race re-build. On top of all that, it would increase the workload on the devs so that there was more time in between full stable releases. This is a fairly small team, after all.

Open batas, as described here (I like to call pre-releases), probably wouldn't be a good idea. Primarily because they would be unbalanced due to the way that factions are worked on at different rates, causing balance issues between units and build strategies. For example, a skilled player on a pre-release could win every time as the Federation, but that same skilled player, even against a complete newbie, may be hard-pressed to even survive the first five minutes against the Federation while playing as say the Klingons.

We consider each released version a full version - not a beta.
Although we are not a commercial game, we try to hold to similar standards: we have an active multiplayer community, and a constant state of "beta test" is not conducive to allowing interoperability. We provide newsposts, screenies, and the forums, so that content can continually be discussed and revised
.
Our beta phases are designed to eliminate bugs and balancing problems and involve continuous discussion between team members, so having them be "open" would generally not be too helpful.
Why not play 326 while you wait?
. There will always be a "next" version, so we prefer to maintain coherent stable versions of Fleet Ops

I propose something more simple and easy, a very fun and descriptive video replay with the latest test version, in that way we can see how things are going, and get a glance of the new mechanics of the game.
Of course with a warning that is an unfinished work, and is subject to changes. It would be even better than the update news post, which by the way is 2 weeks old

I suggested a test video replay actually quite a long time ago. I think showing a segment of a game, or a whole game would be quite nice. You would need a willing commentator though, and those could be hard to come by... I do know someone though, he's got a nice brand new computer too so he can do replays again... I think I could pull some strings

For those eager to play the pre-release version i suggest you put on those mini skirts and mascara. Take your picture, send it to the dev team and hope they fancy you enough to grant you access.
Granted, the odds for success/admission are slim but perhaps the devs will get a good laugh and work just that tiny bit faster. Please sacrifice yourselves so we may get our hands on the new release 1-2 days sooner.

Edit: there's also the chance that the devs will work faster to stop those hideous pictures being sent to them...

Unless they actually start working slower with each thread, like some evil punishment.

Impossible. Sending those mini skirt/mascara pictures will be like pouring energy drinks into an already hyperactive kid. The Devs will speed up to the point that they'll cross speed of light, go back in time and finish the release yesterday.
