Modding Questions
Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

I've just had a few questions that have been going around in my head for some time, I was curious if I could get any answers. Any help is much appreciated.
1. Auto-mining beams
Is it possible to have it so that a mining beam will automatically harvest from a moon if you park a ship nearby rather then having to right click on the moon?
2. mp3 compatible
Will mp3's (or any other compressed audio file format) ever be compatible with FO? Having 50-75 mb sized files for music just seems a little ridiculous at this point, considering I can compress those to about 5 mb in size if they were mp3's or ogg's. If mp3's will never be made compatible do you know of any good program that can shrink a .wav file to be a more reasonable size?
3. Resource trade-off
Is it possible to make it so that when a mining frieghter docks and gives you a dilithium, your tritanium count goes down or vice versa?
4. Variable textures/SOD's
Is it possible to make it so that the same ship can share multiple SOD's and when you build a ship it will complete with one of the variable SOD's? This would be awesome for giving the same ships different textures so that each ship looks different even though they are the same class.
5. Latinium still in?
Is Latinum still in FO or was it replaced by Tritanium? If it was replaced, is it possible to add in an additional resource type?
6. Colors
How can you manipulate the colors that players can select for their team in Instant Action and multiplayer?

Similar to the Trading station manual options, except automatic?

There should be an odf file called 'Teamcolours' or something like that.

1) Don't think so, I think it's hard coded but perhaps one of the devs could say.
2) No you can't use mp3s only wavs and I don't think there's a way to shrink them without loosing quality, I use super converter for doing stuff like that though I don't think it will help.
3) I don't think so.
4) Variable SODs is possible using the fleetops replace weapon, though it's actually variable ships but presumably you would use the same odf just different SODs using the basename command in the odf.
5) I think Latinum was replaced, there's a limited number of resources in A2 the names were just shuffled round, though I'm not sure how many are left being there was biomatter and all sorts in the original.
6) Not sure never tried changing the colours again not sure it's possible though.

1) We havent touched that yet, but i think you could mimik a similar behaivor using a temporary trigger and some resource weapons, but havent tested something like that yet
2) It doesn't make much runtime difference on which the sound is encoded, basically WAV is faster read then MP3, so its only a matter of file size, and thats a quite irrelevant factor nowerdays, as they can easily be zipped to get good download sizes.. We haven't worked on that front much and i don't think its worth the time
3) That depends on how you gain the resource. In a generic way: nope thats not possible. But if you gain the resource via som kind of resource weapon (like Collective Connections for example) thats of course possible, just check the Borg synthesis in Fleet Operations
4) You can do something like that by using randomized replace weapons, you might also want to check out the OverlaySod, as it might save you some modeling work if you just want to have similar ships with different components.
5) Yep Latinum has been replaced by Tritanium. If you don't need any extra-functionality of Latinum (I dont think there is any), you could simply use another resource, like "metal" which is used for collective connections
6) Yep, check the "teamcolor.odf"
